OK? Now that I have your attention, we do need to start thinking about re-building our ice rink. The boards are nearly 20 years old, we have aging equipment and a lot of kids depend on us. PLEASE HELP! I think this is a wall we can ALL agree on!
Nome Winter Sports Association (NWSA) was formed to provide support for organized winter outdoor sporting activities in Nome, Alaska. Sporting activities include, but are not limited to, skiing biathlon, ice skating and hockey.
We own and operate the Nome ice rink(City owns the property) which we built in 2001 with donated funds, we had the high school shop students build the side boards and they were installed by volunteers. Over the years we have slowly built up a collection of both used and new skates through donations and small purchases. These skates are free to use to the general public but we did not have the funds to operate a warm up shack to hand out skates and supervise the rink. All maintenance and operations were conducted by volunteers making the rink open sporadically. In 2016 we hired a part time rink manager for the skating season so we could provide regular hours and supervision to the youth of Nome and started our "after school" program. We serve 30 to 40 kids a day with a good healthy atmosphere, snacks and of course, skates! ALL FOR FREE because of people like yourself!
Why should I give? you ask? WE NEED YOUR DOLLARS to continue this program. NWSA is funded primarily through charitable gaming, more specific, pull-tabs. This type of funding is subject to the ups and downs of seasonal changes, depressed economy and a few other unknowns. It is seriously jeopardizing the program and in need of your support.
