Baby Ben's Medical Expenses

Talipes Varus Foot Condition ‌Complete Syndactyly Hand Condition Hello to those that know us, and to those who don't welcome to our story. I'm Kelly and my partner is Ben. Generally we are private people, but we decided with the expenses we are looking at incurring over the next few years in medical expenses, physio, braces, orthotic shoes, and traveling we decided to share our story, and ask for some help to ensure we don't also have the stress of the financial burden. I have applied to take medical leave to care for Ben Jr.  I was still working and I had intended to go back to work once cleared by my doctor, but will need to travel with Ben Jr.  while his dad works.

It all began about a year ago, we devided after almost 7 years together that maybe it was time to talk to my specialist about our options to have a child together.  My specialist did some test on both of us and I was refered to Mount Sinai Hospital to see if I would be accepted as a patient. On the same day I was accepted into the envitro program at the hospital, and we found out I was pregnant on our own!!! In my early 20's I had a tubal Ligation that required emergency surgery so this new pregnancy was deemed high risk and I had to do some extra tests and an emergency ultrasound. I was sick throughout my whole pregnancy which always worried me. Finally though one night I couldnt sleep, and was very uncomfortable and at 5:00am I awoke  Ben to tell him it was time to go to the hospital. Although I wasnt  due just yet off we went. Thursday, Febuary 18th, 2016 at 11:46am, our beautiful Ben Jr. was born, almost 1 month early which was shocking to start with, and then our amazing nurse comes before showing us our new son to explain our son was born with birth defects, but was otherwise perfect and healthy.  It was a double shocker to hear that after knowing he was early.
Our perfect Ben Jr. was born with not one but two birth defect conditions. One is Talipes Varus (clubbed foot), and Syndactyly (Webbed Fingers, or Toes). These conditions often happen together, and it is unknown as to what exactly causes it studies are being done which I will follow. I Have attached some images and information below on both conditions for those who want to know more about either condition.
We met with a pediatrician from Neo Kids locally, and she told us it's more common than we think, and that it is very correctable by doctors at Sick Kids. We were refered to sick kids the same day he was born and not long after, Sick Kids called, and booked little Ben Jr. an appointment for March 17th 2016 where he will begin treatment that day for his foot condition. This process will be ongoing for a number of years to ensure it has been corrected properly. They will reset the bones, cast it and every 2 weeks do the same thing until it is fully corrected. There is a possibility of surgery for his foot, but that is not known until we meet with the Sick Kids Othopedist.
Ben Jr. will need surgery for his hand condition, but they won't start that until he is 6 months or older due to the anesthetic needed to complete the surgery. He will see 2 departmemts at Sick Kids for both of his conditions. I have complete faith all will work out, and he will bearly even know he had some minor issues as a baby! We are hoping everything goes well, and is over quickly for him, and also for us. It will be hard to watch our little miracle boy go through so much being so small. He has a large family of people who love, and support him. He will overcome anything that may come his way, he has two very determined, dedicated parents who will go above, and beyond to enure his future happiness.

I would like to thank you for reading our story, and for taking time out of your day to read up on these types of birth defects in babies. Along with recieving help ourselves we hope we can help educate other people or a family who just found out there new baby has one or more of this type of birth defect. It will be a long road, but growing up with my own health conditions has prepared me for anything that may come up for our tiny son Ben Jr.

Sincerely,
Kelly & Ben Sr.
