Eric's Emergency Relief Fund

Dear friends,

My name is Frank He and I am the director and owner of HeCares Integrative Medicine Center located in Sunnyvale (www.HeCares.net). As a licensed acupuncturist and professor of acupuncture and sports medicine, I am also a faculty member for the DAOM program of Five Branches University-a graduate school of traditional  Chinese medicine (www.FiveBranches.edu).

This campaign is NOT for me, but for Eric Wei Wang, a friend and international doctoral student at Five Branches University currently training at my clinic. He could have been comfortably working as a doctor in a large hospital in China. However, Eric is a person of great integrity and chose not to earn his main income in China by over-prescribing drugs and lab/imaging tests, a cultural phenomenon little known to most Westerners. Therefore, he found his way to come to America to study sports medicine under my mentorship. Eric has proved to be an excellent clinician in sports medicine and pain management, and is well received by my staff and patients.

Life has been great until a recent auto accident. On 9/13/2015, Eric was involved in a head-on collision caused by a distracted driver who swerved into his lane. Not only was his car totally wrecked, but his wife also suffered injuries. She was hurried to SF general hospital due to a complicated hip- joint fracture. Surgery was necessary and took place the next morning. She is now confined to a wheelchair for the next three months. Eric was able to get back to work. Between clinical teachings and caring for his patients, Eric has been busy taking his wife to follow up appointments and physical therapy.

To add to the suffering, Eric is facing discrimination and harassment from his auto insurance company. Farmers insurance has offered very little compensation for his car and medical expenses. Eric has been under tremendous stress since he received his wife's medical bill of roughly $120,000. Needless to say... he is broke!

When it rains, it pours! In the early morning of 11/16/15, at about 5 am, I was awakened by Eric's phone call saying that he was in severe pain for about 6 hours and did not get any relief from self-treating. Based upon the nature of his complaints, I suspected he had an intestinal obstruction and advised he call 911. I rushed to his house and when I arrived, saw that he was in an ambulance being examined. A moment later, he walked away from the ambulance, got into my car and asked me to drive him to the ER so he would not have to foot the $1600 bill for the ambulance ride.  No kidding! It was barely a five minute drive away!

We rushed to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center's Emergency Room. Fortunately, it did not take long for the medical team to offer medication to relieve the pain.  When asked to quantify his pain, Eric said it was about 6-7 out of 10. Bro??!! I saw many patients in my office who rated their pain as 7-8 out of 10. Eric is a modest tough guy! Later that morning Eric was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and needed surgery imminently. I could tell that he was hesitant because of the potential financial burden. I advised him to do the surgery, and we would find a solution later.

Surgery went really well and Eric was discharged yesterday 11/17/2015. However, he is very tired and stressed after all the recent turmoils in his life. Now, we are trying to figure out a way to help him get through the next few weeks. He cannot drive or lift  for at least two weeks. His wife can only move around in wheelchair. As the breadwinner, Eric is facing some unprecedented challenges-
-huge amount of medical expenses ($120,000 for wife and $20,000 at least estimated for Eric)
-property loss ($6000 for his car)
-living expenses ($2500 for housing and food for the four of them)

I'm NOT asking friends to help with his medical bills. However, Eric could use some help in just basic living needs and the immediate physical therapy which he has to pay out of pocket.  As a friend, here is what I have done for Eric:

• $5,000 emergency relief scholarship
• Helping him sign a lease for a new car
• Fundraising among Facebook friends
• Fundraising in my office from patients
• Smoked turkey for Thanksgiving dinner
• Searching for necessary legal assistance
• Free medical care for Eric and his family
• Transportation service for Eric and his family

I have been blessed to be able to support people in need and other great causes in the past: a child fighting for cancer, a stranger loosing a house to fire, friends run/walk to stop cancer, a patient joining a meaningful bike ride to stop AIDS, relief for Tsunami in Japan or earthquake in Haiti, etc. Giving is a blessing!

With the holiday season around the corner, let’s bring light to their very first Christmas in America. I’m sure Eric and his family will understand and appreciate the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

• Send love and wishes
• Give a holiday gift to his family
• Make a donation of any amount
• Purchase gift cards for Eric’s great treatments
• or your unique way to express that you DO care
