Payton's Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
"And though she be but little, she is fierce". Something our family believes will get us through a tough time. Payton is such a strong little girl, with spunk and sass. She will not only flex her muscles and fight off stupid cancer, she will do it in a stylish and spunky way.

Many of you know, Payton was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on July 3rd, 2017. We have decided to deal with the bad news by saying F you cancer, and moving on. We are now holding on to all the good. We of course will have our good and bad days, but we are going to pray for more good than bad and we are going to live and love every moment of the good.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of reality when it comes to kicking Rhabdomyosarcomas butt. And that is a pretty extensive treatment for the next 9 months. Payton will have at least 1 appointment every week for a chemo treatment. Sometimes its just one drug once a week, sometimes its 2 drugs everyday for a week, and other times its 3 drugs and an overnight stay at Children's.

The hardest part of Payton's treatment will be the radiation (starting late September). She will be getting radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks straight. The radiation will be down at the Mayo in Rochester as they have a very unique radiation called Proton Beam (only one in the country), which also the radiation to be very percise to the spot that needs to be killed off. Since Payton's tumor is up on her jaw line by her ear, traditional radiation (effects more of the body than one specific area) is not an option due to the potential risks of radiation with core nerves and her brain. The location of Payton's tumor brings complications. They believe she will have a fair amount of pain in her mouth and throat due to radiation killing off all the good stuff. Because of that, Payton will be getting a feeding tube placed in her stomach for the radiation timeframe to ensure that during a period of time when her body is getting beat up that she can keep the nutrition up to help keep her little body going.

The support and love that we are receiving will go to a variety of things to help us get through the next year and beyond.

We thank everyone for wanting to contribute to Payton during this journey. It means the world to us to have the love and support to getting Payton back to her healthy little self. There has been an outpouring of love through notes, meals, gift cards, offering to clean/cut the grass, gifts for Payton and Austin and the kindness in the donation of people's money.

Below are a few of the core ways the money will be used...

- treatment medical costs, help alleviate the out of pocket costs with our insurance to get treatment.
- housing in Rochester, with Payton's radiation treatment it will be too hard to go back and forth from the cities to Rochester everyday for 6 weeks.
- long term development issues, Payton may have some pretty significant hurdles she has to deal with in her adolescences due to radiation. She will likely have development issues with her jaw as her head grows. Dental problems with teeth that were radiated. Potential hearing loss.

Please know, there are a lot of different ways you can help outside of just a money donation.
- Meals, are always super wonderful, one less thing to worry about when the days are crazy.
- Gas cards, we will be sending a lot of time driving to either Children's or Mayo
- Prayers, we will take as many prayers as we can get
- A change in perspective, the next time you think about how you can help or how you can be better, think about ways that can significantly impact others. Donate to a charity that you are passionate about, by something from a company that stands for something (love your melon), hand over a dollar to a homeless person.

We want to say thank you so much for your love, compassion and generosity. The outpouring of love to Payton and our family has humbled us beyond belief.
