About Pawsitive Rescue

Despite the complexity it takes to bring this sanctuary to life, the mission is quite simple.  Pawsitive Rescues would provide a safe haven for people and animals alike, with a focus on people suffering from mental illnesses and dogs who are living on borrowed time.  A mission like this would offer a stable, happy and healthy life to shelter dogs and strays who otherwise would have been euthanized; and whether or not they get adopted out of our program would be of no matter.  Here, they could live out their life without fear of waking up one day and being forced to realize that it would be their last.  The Pawsitive Rescues team would spread awareness and knowledge about mental illness and animal rescue among the rest of the community using a variety of resources, and it would allow our employees/volunteers to have the best chance at the happy and balanced life that everyone deserves.  This sanctuary would provide a place where human/canine interaction promotes a healthy and rewarding lifestyle due to the beneficial relationship between all involved as well as the support they receive from Pawsitive Rescues.

The Pawsitive Rescues team would have some constant goals in mind.  This includes but is not limited to: spreading awareness about mental illnesses as well as the benefits that animals/dogs have on a person’s overall health and wellbeing.  Our volunteers and employees would be a perfect example of what positive human/canine interactions relationships can do.

I would love to see Pawsitive Rescues join up with mental health corporations and offer a sort of rehabilitation for some of their patients.  Sometimes, just being in a mental hospital and learning of the tools and processes a person needs isn’t enough to feel better.  Pawsitive Rescues would offer a place where each day they get out of bed, they would personally see the real impact they have on animal’s lives, and their experiences here would show them that their efforts truly save lives that otherwise would have been doomed to euthanization.  Pawsitive Rescues would open arms to all qualified people, including people who suffer from mental illness, recovering substance abusers, victims of hate crimes and/or physical/emotionall/sexual abuse.  Pawsitive Rescues’ property would be a place of improvement and safety, where each day a volunteer/employee came to work, they would be directly involved in making positive change.  This sanctuary would be the place that so many people and dogs need to lead a better, more rewarding lifestyle.

We would run adoptions, but unlike many other animal rescues, euthanization due to space would never occur.  The dogs that are accepted here are accepted for life, whether they get adopted or not.  The only time euthanization would occur would be because of health issues/concerns that put the animal’s quality of life at serious risk, or for severe behavioral issues that cannot be fixed.  The entire team would work consistently on setting these dogs up for their best chances of adoption; but either way, a happy and fulfilled life is 100% guaranteed.  Pawsitive Rescues would have an on-site veterinarian who would perform needed vaccinations, as well as spay/neuter dogs upon arrival and keep their overall health in check throughout their residence on our property.

These details have plenty of time to expand and grow, but as you can see, as is the creation of any non-profit organization, it will take a lot of support from the community.  Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

The Information You Need, Broken Down

For the animals:  Pawsitive Rescues would be a safe haven where even if the dogs are never adopted, they can live out a healthy, happy, and social life free of neglect and abuse.  We would take in dogs that seem unadoptable at kill-shelters and give them the life they deserve.  We would take in strays, nurse them back to health and show them happiness.  With a large pack of dogs, the animals would be socialized and cared for until the crew decides they are adoptable; where either we would bring a select few dogs to a city for ‘adoption weekends’ or allow our visitors to adopt a new member of the family directly at our kennel.  Our fenced and protected property would give the dogs plenty of room to run around and exercise as they like, with almost free roam.  Inside the shelter, (where they would have 24 hour access via large doggy doors) the dogs would be brought in and accounted for in the evenings.  Dogs would be fed twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening, with a balanced meal of measured chow and fresh water all throughout the day and night.

The dogs we bring in would be spayed/neutered upon arrival had they not been already to prevent new pups from being born.  Dogs would be kept up to date on all of their vaccinations and have plenty of check ups with an on site veterinarian.

Whether or not a dog gets adopted is no matter, because either way, a happy and healthy life is guaranteed.

For the people:  This refuge is not exclusive of the community.  In fact, this safe haven is not just for animals in need of a second chance; it is for people, too.  Many people who suffer from a variety of mental illnesses (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, etc..) have trouble keeping steady jobs.  I understand just how debilitating mental illnesses can be, and nobody deserves to be shamed or feel lost because of it.

Our safe haven would bring these people a new life, whether they want to stay and work for a few weeks, months or make the job more long term.  Every day (or as often as they could…  Getting outside and living life is ALWAYS encouraged) they would be a welcomed part of our team and our family; learning the skills they need to care for the kennel and truly making a difference in the life of animals.  They would have purpose, and a timeless experience to give them satisfaction.

Upon sign ups where we would check the person’s compatibility with different duties, they would be placed. Whether they started small (feedings, cleaning, small training), or went right into the doggy world to assist on adoption check ups, exercises, health checks/vet care, human visitations/tours, etc, they would be welcomed with open arms.

It is unbelievable what effect recognizing your impact can have on a person.  Someone who was depressed and couldn’t quite fit in in a world filled with high expectations and misunderstanding/lack of knowledge might feel like they’d never fit in anywhere.  But here?  They would see first hand that their existence and effort is saving lives, that they are making huge differences in the world each day they get out of bed.  Sometimes all anybody needs is love, support, and meaning.  They would find all three here, and such a turnaround could really bring light into the world of someone who was drowning in darkness.

Our employees, whether they would stay with us for a short period of time or for years would learn what it means to be part of a family, and to work within a community that not only saves animals, but saves people, too.

This would be a safe haven for all.  For people like myself, like you, and like those we have lost in the past.

Your contributions would go directly towards the costs and efforts of creating Pawsitive Rescues.  Every dollar donated would make a world of difference.

The Benefits

Because of the nature of this program, the benefits wouldn’t just be limited to animals.  Not only does this sanctuary offer something for the people who work with us; it helps to create a better, more stable community.  Here’s how…

We’d be taking dogs off of the streets, and taking them from kill shelters.  Approximately 1.2 million dogs are euthanized nationwide per year.  Our service would both allow more openings for dogs to go to other rescue kennels/shelters, and give dogs who never made it to a kennel a second chance.  With us, they would receive top veterinary care.  This keeps not only possible disease off of our community’s streets; but since our dogs would be spayed/neutered upon arrival, it would prevent the reproduction and overpopulation of street dogs (which can unfortunately endanger residents when left to roam the roads).

We would train our dogs.  Any dog who comes through our doors would eventually be processed into our training program (run by our employees and qualified volunteers).  This encourages good behavior, and almost guarantees a well balanced, socialized dog.  With training, it would double their chances of adoption and allow us to bring more future animals into our sanctuary.

Our people would find purpose.  Saving lives every day and truly seeing the impact you make each day you get out of bed can be incredibly inspiring.  Our volunteers and employees would have a safe place where every bit of effort they put forth would be appreciated not only by the rest of the crew, but by the animals that it positively impacts.  Animals and people have always had a strange, beneficial bond.  The animals often find stability, and humans become more balanced themselves.  Research has found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed.  Pets may also have a significant impact on allergies, asthma, social support, and social interactions with other people.  The emotional and physical benefits are endless.

This would offer work and meaning to some of those who find it difficult to hold steady jobs or keep up with life due to mental illness or other reasons.  Pawsitive Rescues would offer the kind of community that so many people need to continue on their path of improvement.

There are many other reasons as to why this program would be a success if it were to come into existence.  Pawsitive Rescue would be a place of balance and support, which, sometimes, is all a person needs to get back on their feet.  Pawsitive Rescue would be the shelter that could set an example for future generations, a place that could let people know that they don’t have any reason to be ashamed of who they are or of what holds them back.  On our property, canines and companions alike could find the happiness and love they have always deserved.

About the Founder

Hi there, and thank you for your interest in an aspiring creation.  As I’m sure you’ve read my mission’s goals, I should introduce myself.  My name is Jordan Ayres, and people know me as an animal lover.  My entire life has revolved around animal activism as well as human rights.  For awhile, I had been thinking about what to do with my life; a stressful decision as I’m sure you know.  For the longest time, I thought I had to choose one or the other.  Do I commit my life to saving animals, the beings that have pulled me from dark places an uncountable amount of times?  Or do I dedicate my passion towards people, my own kind, and those of which I have always felt a protective need to help.

Recently, it struck me.  Why can’t I do both?  Why must I fall into a path towards becoming a therapist or an ASPCA officer?  This revelation lead me to now.

It would be my dream to offer a safe place for both people and animals, both of which I consider equally important.  I want to offer a place that opens arms to those who don’t always feel they fit in, to the many people who suffer from internal demons.  Anxiety, depression, and many other mental illnesses would not define their ability to work here.  Instead, everyone will be treated with the kindness that reflects the size of their own heart.  I want to open my arms and my sanctuary to the LGBT* family as well, offering a new lifestyle to those who were kicked out of their homes or suffered from other kinds of hateful acts.  Everyone would be accepted here, and loved for exactly who they are.  The only requirement is a love for the mission and dedication towards the wellbeing of all.

I dream of running a place that provides a second chance to animals living on borrowed time.  Kennel dogs who pace their pens as their euthanization date comes crawling forward, much like the demons that haunt our safe haven’s people.  After their rescue, they’d be brought to us and be treated with the care that they deserved from the beginning.  Both humans and canines could lead a life of happiness that they should have gotten from the start.

That is my dream, and this is me reaching for it.  I only ask you for one thing; your support.
