Paws For Life Prison Program

Just like the online dating world, I went online to look for my perfect dog match. And just like that, it was love at first site. I saw a picture of Paws and decided to reach out to Karma Rescue to see if he was available for adoption. Their reply, "Paws is available, but he's in prison." Say what?! And that's when I learned about Paws For Life. In short, Paws For Life is a prison program that brings rescued shelter dogs to live full-time with inmates for 12-weeks to earn their 'Canine Good Citizen' certification. So, just like that, I took a trip to Lancaster State Prison to meet Paws to make sure that he had a forever home once he graduated the program. I, of course, swiped right and couldn't wait to bring Paws home. Shortly after, I received an email from Karma Rescue inviting me to the Paws For Life graduation ceremony. This would be an opportunity to watch Paws walk the stage, as well as get the opportunity to meet everyone involved in making this amazing program come together - inmates, prison leaders, Karma trainers and volunteers. I knew going into this that Paws For Life was a great program, but I didn't realize just how powerful of a program it was until I showed up for graduation. This program changes lives, for both humans and dogs alike. I saw inmates, in tears, talking about how these dogs have impacted their lives and how thankful and honored they are to be able to give back to society by giving a dog a second chance at life - something they'll never get to experience. And all of the dogs were happy, bonded, obedient, healthy and all had forever homes to go to after graduation.

This program brings so many wins to the table that I want to help keep it running.  To date, 121 inmates and 73 rescued shelter dogs have experienced Paws For Life and I want to help to increase those numbers.
