Pave the Way for Trey's Success

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Trey Gutierrez and I’m a sophomore at Hendrickson High School, in Pflugerville, Texas. I am a member of the school’s speech and debate team. This year’s season has ended and the topic for next year has already been decided, and my partner, Dylan Scott, and I have already begun our research. However, the two of us are unable to handle all of the research that is required to succeed in the activity.

That’s where summer camps come into play. These camps are held at various college campuses over the summer and allow for debaters from all over the country to research together and prepare for the upcoming season. The camp we are looking to attend this summer is called the “Hoya Spartan Scholars” or HSS. It is a 7 week long camp that is split between two different campuses, the first 3 weeks being at Georgetown University in Washington D.C, and the second 4 weeks at Michigan State University, in East Lansing, Michigan. This camp is one of the most prestigious summer camps in the country, where the best college debaters teach along with some of the most experienced high school coaches there make it a camp where debaters can easily progress over the summer as well as prepare for the next season.

Dylan and I have already witnessed a lot of success this past year: making it to semis of the “Sophomore Hoedown”, placing in the top 4 sophomore-sophomore teams in the entire country; and making it to octafinals of the TFA state tournament, which placed us in the top 16 teams in the state of Texas - the farthest a sophomore team has made it from Hendrickson! While all of these achievements have been great, there is always room for improvement and being able to attend this camp would allow for even more success as we grow and build our skill over the next 2 years.

The problem with this camp being one of the best in the country, however, is the cost to attend it. Without financial aid, the camp is $6,350, and the deadline for the tuition is June 16th. There is also 2 $1,000 deposits that are due by May 5th, making the rest of the tuition $4,350. The cost of this camp is unfortunately too much for my family to afford. My family is in a tough situation financially, due to my father being diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. This diagnosis has led to a permanent disability, which no longer grants him the opportunity to work. Also, my father has been a widow for nine years now, losing his wife, and my mother, to cancer in 2008. His girlfriend has been doing all that she can to overcome the burden of missing my dad’s yearly income, and being a combined family, this has put a financial strain on us all. This is why I must reluctantly ask my family, my friends, and even kind strangers to help me reach my goal of attending this prestigious summer camp. Any donations are extremely helpful, and - whether it’s one dollar or one hundred dollars, will be gratefully appreciated.
