Paul Revere Hidden Figures Trip

We are educators at Paul Revere College Preparatory School a PK-8 public school in the Bernal Heights Neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Our school reflects the diversity outside its walls -- with a student body that is 63 percent Latino, 13 percent African American, and 8 percent Filipino and Pacific Islander. Most of our students come from low-income homes -- more than 82 percent qualify for free and reduced-price meals.
Research shows that for girls and young women studying Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in school, being able to identify female role models helps them imagine themselves as STEM professionals. The role models enhance their perceptions of such careers and boost their confidence in studying such subjects (UMass Amherst 2011).
Living in San Francisco our students at Paul Revere are surrounded by Silicon Valley the headquarters for many leaders in the internet technology and biotechnology fields (Google, Facebook, Genentech, Apple, Twitter etc.) but they do not often have the opportunity meet or even see people who look like them with careers in STEM.
Our students of color, both male and female, deserve the opportunity to see themselves in important leaders in the STEM community. We hope to provide them with this opportunity through a fieldtrip to see the film "Hidden Figures" in theaters. The film tells the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson —brilliant African-American women working at NASA (watch trailer). The movie speaks to the racism, segregation and sexism in 1960s America which remains relevant today as we work to inspire, motivate and push our students at Paul Revere to advocate for themselves, their education and their civil rights inspite of the obstacles that they face on a daily basis.
We hope to raise enough money to take our 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders (approximately 250 students) on a field trip to see the movie at the end of January. The timing of this field trip directly aligns with work going on in our classrooms as students are learning about the real-life history behind the movie as part of our African American heritage celebrations and studies, now underway. Seeing the movie would enrich that work for those classes and make it more exciting for the whole school as we celebrate and reflect on the theme of The Power of Education.
The breakdown of the cost of the trip is less than $9 per student. AMC theaters is offering $6/student tickets ($6 x 250 = $1500) for school trips and at this time we are estimating needing ~$700 funding to cover transportation costs to ensure that students are back at school by dismissal (this number is subject to change as details are finalized).
