My name is Paul Smith.
I've been training in martial arts since I was around 7/8 years old. During that time I have had many achievements. I've won world and national titles in several different disciplines. In 2004 I was my class winner in the Mr Scotland bodybuilding championships.
I have devoted most of my life to learning and teaching martial arts and fitness classes. I have taught seminars in the U.K., Europe and the U.S.
I've had a wide and varied life from being in the military, working as a doorman, personal trainer and a long distance truck driver. I've trucked around Canada and the U.S. Which was definitely a highlight of my life.
My partner is my soul mate!!! She is my world!!! Without this woman I just could not manage this. I also have a beautiful daughter who, since the day she was born, is a pure daddy's girl.
From my immediate family there is only my brother, who tirelessly trawls the internet for any further scientific ALS/MND medical research he can find to help me, and I left.
Unfortunately in March this year my life took a massive, horrendous turn for the worst!!! I was diagnosed with ALS/motor neurone disease. Now I'm fighting the hardest fight of my life!!
I have lost all of the use of my left arm and hand and most use of my right arm and hand. My breathing isn't so good because my diaphragm is basically trying to give up the ghost and I now require the use of a ventilator. I can no longer drive my truck to earn a decent living as the government have taken my licence from me. With no use left in my arms, difficulty speaking and walking employment options are extremely limited to say the least.
All this time I've been battling through it with the amazing strength from my partner Vikki. My diet is all grass fed meat, organic vegetables, completely gluten and sugar free and ketogenic.
I take a lot of supplements and do a quite a few alternative therapies from advice that I have exhaustedly researched hoping to find answers and, if not a cure, at least slow down the degeneration so that I hopefully live long enough to wait for a cure. During this time I'm trying to write books on my life and knowledge so that it can be passed on long after I'm gone. Hopefully it'll inspire or help people in their journey.
I have tried desperately hard to do all this on my own but unfortunately I've come to realise that I can no longer afford to maintain what lesser quality of life I now have. Many friends have told me about this type of thing but I didn't want to do it as I didn't wish to seem like a beggar. But as one of my students said, "You're not begging!!! You're trying to save your life!!"
With that thought ringing in my head I'm asking you all to please help me save my life. There are no treatments or cure available through the NHS therefore my fight for life is totally self-funding.
