30297438_15282195570_r.jpegOur brother and friend Pat had a large stroke a few weeks ago. He was saved by an immediate operation. Pat is a well known photographer  who has been in the music industry for years and has photographed some of the biggest names. He is now going to need a lot of time to make a recovery, but the early signs are very encouraging. As a freelancer he never earned much money and relied on his skill and talent to earn a living. He won't be able to do that for a while and we want to ensure he gets everything he needs  in the meantime.
Helping Pat recover
We are raising money to tide him over the next year and to be in a position to buy any specialist equipment he needs and to provide specialist high level care to help his recovery. We also want to be able to make any adaptations to his flat so he can return to independent living as soon as possible. It is early days but we know we have a long road ahead.

Pat brought a lot of pleasure to the world with his photos and now he needs a bit of that back again from the world. There will be updates as we go along, and we welcome comments and photos and anecdotes. We are very grateful to all the love and support that has already been given, this is what will get Pat through this really tough time...
Thank you all.

Hello everybody. I wanted to write an update and to apologise for not being in communication more.
So, the big news is that Pat is going to be coming home on March 4th to his flat in Tunbridge Wells. It's a huge step and not without issues, but he is desperate to come home and it will be for the best. He had a home visit last weekend for two nights and it went really well. He also happened to come home on his birthday and had some lovely birthday events wtih friends and family.
When Pat is discharged he will have carers visit four times a day to look after him - at least for the start. I am also rallying local friends to make sure he has visitors and we keep a close eye on him. Various of us will be staying with him overnight for the first few weeks to check everything is fine.
The funds we raised here have been absolutely key to keeping him happy and looking after him during his stay in hospital and rehab. Now we enter a new phase where more money will need to be spent, but we are in a good place at the moment.
I am doing some work on his flat including putting in a new walk in shower to make things easier for Pat.
We want to spend some of these funds on private speech therapy over the next few months.
We will almost certainly have to cover a lot of expenses over the next few years - we're entering a new phase.
I will be pushing this fundraising occasionally over the next few months, my apologies for bothering you.
I will update you all soon after Pat is home. If you live nearby and want to help or have other ideas for helping him out, please let me know.
Much love from the whole family and of course Pat himself.

News! Pat has a 'going home' date of January 7th. Now, I have no idea how this will work, but it's going to require a lot of support of course. This is the time we've been anticipating with this fundraising of course and I'll be updating you all as we put our plans into place, but it's sure going to be easier having some funds to use.
Also, check out this video from this week - Pat very chuffed at saying 'I can't remember'!

On the fundraising front, we have raised around £10,000 more from other sources, so the total so far is over £20,000 - coming up to half way. We are now looking at doing work for when Pat comes home in January so every penny counts. We raised the extra money from the Patstonbury gig at the Forum in Tunbridge Wells and an online auction of donated photographs from a super bunch of very generous photographers! More things coming along soon, and thanks everybody who has been helping out.

Here's an update on Pat from a meeting yesterday. He's in rehab in London now if you haven't heard, and they want to get him home by January. But, a long way to go still!
> Pat is slowly gaining the muscle strength in his right leg with physiotherapy. With assistance of two people, he is able to walk and stand for a short period of time.
> They are fitting a shoulder support for his weakened shoulder which will ease the pain and aid his physio. The support will be fitted on Thursday.
> The overall aim is to send him home in Jan
> As long as Pat is with someone, he doesn't have to wear his helmet.
> But wheelchair taxi is a must.(all black cabs are wheelchair cabs, but minicabs are not).
> Pat is very good at using gestures and facial expressions to communicate. Therapist is going to explore using iPad, writing and drawing with him.
> Keep conversations simple so he can pick up clues and not to be confused.
>Has downloaded a free app called grid player on his iPad. A very good visual aid for Pat and us.
> Anyone who is interested in a joint session one evening, please let me know. The therapist is more than happy to host joint sessions with Pat and family and friends.
> They have noticed twitching on Pat's right side of face and his right arm recently, so he is on Keppra, anticonvulsant tablets.
> If any of us noticed any twitching , perhaps video it and show it to the doctors.
> Pat's right eye doesn't close probably at night and is under constant strain, hence the red eye. They are aware of this and is dealing with it. They find the traditional method of taping the eye shut at night not effective.
