Background on the Park Lawn Lakeshore Improvement Association

The Park Lawn and Lakeshore neighbourhood is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Toronto, outside of the downtown core. 

With this exponential growth must come continued focused action to build the community from those living in it.

The Park Lawn & Lakeshore Improvement Association's (PLIA) focus is to improve the lives of working professionals, students and young families in the area bound by the Humber River, the Queensway, Royal York, and Lake Ontario.

Our Complimentary Shuttle Service

The first priority of the PLIA (and one of the main perks of membership, at the outset) is the creation a free members only shuttle that connects the condos on Manitoba Street, Park Lawn Road, and Silver Moon Drive, to the Mimico GO train station during the rush hours          .

The underlying motive of this foundational project has one long term goal and a secondary goal. The secondary goal is to ensure ease of transportation for those choosing to live in the Park Lawn and Lakeshore area. The long-term focus of this project is to demonstrate the need Park Lawn and Lakeshore to a have a more community assessable Go train station ideally located at the site of the Mr. Christie Plant. 

Details about the Route & Bus

The PLIA Member Shuttle schedule will be adjusted to suit as many of the members, in the most efficient way possible, by altering both the planned route and hours according to demand, and on an evolving basis.

The proposed schedule is 6:30a to 9:30a and 3:30p to 6:30p, with service every 30 minutes to start, and changing to 15 minutes once two buses are running on the route (based on membership levels). However we may expand the hours of coverage to better suit the needs of our members. We will be constantly surveying members on how the service can be improved.

The proposed route is indicated below, with red pins to designate stops. During the morning rush the bus will go clockwise, and counter clockwise during the afternoon/evening rush.

The shuttle will only operate Monday to Friday, and not on statutory holidays.

The PLIA Member Shuttle will be equipped with a GPS tracking system and by downloading the app you’ll be able to tell in real time where it is, and how soon the closest shuttle will be to your stop. As well, each shuttle will have complimentary WIFI. The buses will have individual seating, and are equipped with heat and air conditioning.

All buses serving the PLIA Members are operated by an independent company with over 50 buses and ample drivers to ensure we have a back-up bus and driver available at all times.

Membership Options and Benefits

There will be 3 tiers of memberships:
Super Early Bird Member - $175 – 4 Month Full Membership  (Limited to the first 50 members)

Early Bird Member  - $199 - 4 Month Full Membership  (Members 51-100)

Regular - $225 - 4 Month Full Membership (All others)

Social Membership -$25 – 1 year *

Other PLIA Perks

The PLIA is a lot more than just a free shuttle. Our goal is to improve the lives of those living in our community by lobbying the City and Province for various items that are expressed by our members. While there are other associations in our neighbourhood, they fail to connect with most of the younger demographic. The PLIA is open to both renters and owners a like. The $25 Social Membership fee helps to cover costs of special projects, advertising, and hosting meetings.

The PLIA will be scheduling quarterly meeting at a neutral location easily accessible by all. PLIA will strive to schedule the first meeting once the initial funding goal is reached.

In addition to regular meetings, the PLIA is also working on a list of local businesses that will be offering discounts to all members. We’ll continue to update this list grows.

I don’t use transit, I drive – why should I support this initiative?

Having easy connectivity to the GO Transit system from your door step is a major value add. If you own property, this will help to increase your property value!

Any initiative that reduces the number of drivers in the area and takes some of the pressure off of our local roads is a win for all – drivers and transit users alike!

 How much needs to be raised to get started?

Once we raise 50% of our funding target we’ll be able to start the contract with the private bus company. It will take 2-3 weeks to get a drive assigned to the route and we will be pushing launch the service as soon as possible.

What happens if we exceed the goal?

The more the merrier. We will continue adding buses to the route and perhaps create two routes to better service members, and make for quicker transit times. We have planned for 80-90% fill rates during peak times, but most of the times the buses should be 50% full or less.

I heard something like this started in Liberty Village, but was shut down?

Other attempts at offer a similar service have failed due to one main area.  TTC currently have a legal monopoly on the sale of individual transportation tickets. This association will therefore not sell individual tickets rather it will provide this service as a free perk to membership within the PLIA. We have engaged several consultants on this to ensure we are operating within the rules.

What happens if we do not reach a level to get started?

Based on initial polling of area residents, it is highly unlikely that the initiative will not achieve funding. However, if that does occur, all non-social membership fees paid will be returned.

Can I share a membership?

No, Memberships are not transferable and your member card will have your photo on it.

When is the projected start time?

The goal is to have the PLIA Member Shuttle fully operational by late October or early November. The sooner we reach 50% of the funding target, the sooner it happens.

Business Sponsorship

If you have a business and would like to get some more exposure to area residents, we have several awesome options for you!

Flyer Advertisement

Over the next 3 weeks we’ll be doing a activation campaign at West Lake to pedestrian traffic, handing out flyers advertising the PLIA, and the perks of membership.  The front side will be dedicated to PLIA Information, and we are offering the space on the back of the flyer for $500, or two spaces for $275 each.

Additionally, we are considering doing an unaddressed ad mailer to approximately 10,000 condo units in the neighborhood.  The cost for sponsorship on the back of this mailer will be $1500 - far less than the cost of a mailer yourself.

Outside Bus Advertising

We will be offering advertising on the back and sides of each bus.  Each advertising term will be 4 months, and installation cost is extra. Only our approved vendors can be used for install and removal. This is an excellent way to have a rolling billboard in our neighbourhood during the busiest times of day!

Membership Card Advertisement

Each PLIA member will have a membership card with their information on the front. We will be offering the back as advertising space for a cost of $500. We estimate between 200-500 members, and the card is used for 4 months.

WiFi Sponsorship

The final option we have, and this still needs to be confirmed, is sponsorship of the free WiFi we’ll be offering on the shuttle buses. Providing this is available, the sponsoring company’s name will be the password and SSID for WiFi access.
