Paris's Place

Thank you so much for showing interest in my mission! My name is Paris and I have been involved with outreach and non-profit organizations for more than 5 years. I was raised in the church and understand the importance of having faith based organizations however, poverty, homelessness, and starvation have no faith. They target those who more likely have more faith than most and that is why it is important to create more opportunity for a shelter.
My plan is to being to restore abandoned properties and turn them into living spaces for young people up to the age of 25. As I stated before I have worked on the streets with homeless people and this demographic of people can benefit the most from the services I plan to provide. In the future I would love to help out those of all ages, but that is not realistic.
The young people that I plan to service will be on a path to success, but need a little extra support to get there. I plan to focus on young people who are full time college students, because right now in the Twin Cities area you are not allowed to get subsidized housing if you are a full -time college student. I work with young people everyday who are sleeping in their car or a place uninhabitable, because they want to finish school and cannot work full-time because of this.
The second priority type of clients I want to service is pregnant/and or parenting teen moms who are under 18. Currently there are only a few shelters that will service an underage mom even while being pregnant. There are organizations that will help young parenting women, however most of them are religious and uncomfortable. I want to be able to provide a space that takes the worry off of young people temporarily so that they are able to establish their own roots, especially those estranged from their guardians.

I only am asking for $10,000  to start off with, because I am planning on submitting proposals to get some additional funding. I am also planning to start the shelter out of my home to start. I plan to buy 8 queen bunk beds, bedding, food, and the necessary hygiene equipment. I want to be a shelter that provides food as well. I want to be different from most shelters, because I actually want to help. I plan to recruit a few people who support my cause that can help with resources for these young people.
For example, I would love to find a volunteer or extremely cheap workforce specialist that can help young people find employment and that would be the form of our intake process requiring everyone to look for some form of employment. Once employed I want to give them 2 months of living at the shelter for free and during this time they move from our workforce coach to a housing coach. The role of the housing coach would be to establish great relationships with landlords in the community in order to get these young people housed, but it is important to note that we will not provide a housing subsidy. My goal is to teach these young people how to live in a world without support. With the government shutdown so many families have been struggling, because they rely heavily on government resources they don't know other valuable resources available to them and I plan to educate these young people before they leave my shelter.
In addition to the workforce coach and housing coach I want to have an additional person teaching life skills to these young people weekly while at shelter. I want them to learn budgeting skills, about local food shelves, how to shop without food stamps, how to apply for medical, how to eat healthy, and how to put wants over needs.
I could go on for decades about how we need more things in our community to help young people transition into adulthood, but I plan to be the change in my community that I am looking for. I am open to suggestions, ideas and volunteers for the cause.
Please feel free to reach out.
