Pam's Kidneys

Dear Friend,

I’m reaching out to my circle of friends to ask for help.

I have Stage 4 kidney disease, must go on dialysis and will need a transplant.  At this point I am unable to work and have no income coming in.  I'm applying for disability insurance, which I've worked enough to earn, but it's a very difficult process to get approved. I have a hearing for that in July of 2015. But if I don’t do anything I’ll be in huge financial trouble by then. I spoke to a lawyer Tuesday about filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy to protect my house. I may or may not have to do that.  I’m already behind on my mortgage.

My kidney failure is not a huge surprise. I've had uncontrolled diabetes for over 30 years. I've had four surgeries on my eyes to correct my diminished vision (due to retinopathy). I also have neuropathy, which causes extreme pain in my extremities. I am severely anemic, which causes extreme fatigue and shortness of breath.

I was an electrician for much of my youth and was laid off from a long-term research job in 2011 while my mom was dying. I tried to work for unions since I’d spent most of my life as an activist, but coming in at the ground level proved to be difficult and not pay well.  I knew I didn't have time to work my way back up the ladder due to my declining health, so I began selling real estate and doing private music gigs at a desperate pace. I've done this with the understanding that I would eventually need to quit work and focus exclusively on my health. Unfortunately, the day of reckoning has come sooner than I thought it would.

Thanks for help, love and support at this difficult and challenging time in my life.

Dear friends, I'm adjusting really well to dialysis. My energy is way up and my weight is down, which is the only upside to kidney disease.

I do it three times a week at 6:30am so I'll have the rest of the day.

A young cousin (19 yo) offered me her kidney, but her mom is against it. We'll see how that works out.

I'm feeling pretty happy for the most part. I'm working part time, taking guitar lessons and doing more singing.

Speaking of which my women's chorus is traveling to Ireland over my birthday weekend next fall. The bad news is I can't go. I'm on the list for a kidney. I have to get to the hospital within an hour if one comes through. If I get one I wouldn't be cleared to travel for a year after. Oh well!

I'll let you know if there's any news.

Love Pam

I'm having a third surgery on my arm Wednesday. My fistula keeps scarring over. A fistula is what they give you to accommodate dialysis. I've been fortunate in that I haven't felt super bad just tired, but this week the nausea has gotten worse. I've lost about 40 pounds over the past few months. I met a young woman of 35 through my friend Margie who crowd sourced her kidney. She had her transplant last week. Once she's up to it I'll ask her to help me figure that out. A few of you have asked about donating. You have to be perfectly healthy. If you are, you can live a normal life after donating. My friend Denice's dad is still super active and healthy after giving her his kidney over 40 years ago. My sons are great and very supportive, but cannot donate. Damian only has one kidney and Jobari is not a match. Btw I'm so happy to have met my grand daughter. She is a definite mood booster. I don't remember being that sweet or girly. The only complaint is that I wish I had more friends close.
I love you! Thanks for your continued concern.❤️

A number of you have asked how to help further. I would love it if folks did whatever they could to help save Medicare and/or fight for decent affordable health care for everybody.

After almost a year I got full medical coverage. I recently found a little part time job that supplements my disability insurance. Once the state got wind of the job they began charging me a $120 per month premium and a $30 per doctor's visit co-pay. They have also increased my co-pay for meds. I take a lot of meds.

I know a number of you are donors and friends of politicians. Maybe you can write letters or call the right person. I've met with some state level legislators about these issues and it's hard to know whether they're really going to move to improve things. It's extremely stressful and frustrating to have to deal with insurance issues while you're ailing.

Love you

I was first diagnosed with Stage IV kidney disease in March of 2014. At that time my function was about 20% My doctor prepared me for the day when they would completely die and finally come. I'd been feeling well enough to work part time. I'd been getting iron shots and taking tons on mess...hanging on. Anyway today my test came back at 8% function. I'm in stage V complete renal failure. I've been nauseaus pretty much every day and my appetite is gone, but my breathing is ok etc. I'm going to start dialysis. I have a job that lets me work when ever I can get in. I'm hoping my energy won't change much. The doc said we can make it work. I'm sending this message only to my donors and close friends. The past ones I've posted to Facebook. I'm trying not to lean too much on my sons. I have tons of friends, but it's hard to know what to ask for outside of a kidney. I love you guys so much. Pam
