The healing power of creative therapy

I have suffered from severe depression and anxiety for about 10 years. It was absolutely debilitating and the struggle was not just myself but the closest people around me. Friends and family who suffered trying to help.

I was left with two options: let it swallow me or reclaim my life.

I've always had artistic skill but wasn't sure how to use this ability and help others at the same time.  Aiding others with depression through painting seemed like the next step because of how much art benefited in my recovery. I knew that taking on this new venture would mean a lot of work but I was now ready to take it on board.

How it helped me and how I can help others:
Teaching people to paint is a unique approach to depression treatment that helps you get in touch with your feelings and use creative expression as an outlet which has been the catalyst to helping me in my recovery.

Painting therapy can help express inner thoughts and can be used as a complementary addition, not a substitute to more traditional depression treatments.

I am not a doctor or have yet to apply for my formal training in therapy.

I simply want to give people like me an opportunity to break through some of the barriers that may be blocking them through the healing power of painting in groups. And once I'm more established have the funds to apply to the Advanced Diploma of Transpersonal Art Therapy course on the Gold Coast.

Group painting sessions are fun and participants can receive many benefits:

1) Creating art gives people a product you can see and learn
2) Evaluating your painting can help pin point aspects of your life you may want to change
3) Being able to express yourself without being judgmental can break through some of the negativity of depression
4) Taking part in my group painting sessions can help connect with others
5) Letting go of your emotions can create a sense of trust in yourself, others and the healing process

The painting sessions are not just for artists or creative types; people of all ages and all backgrounds can try it.  And for this reason I've been mindful to call these sessions 'Paint Parties'. It is very important that the functions are not just associated with 'Classes'  or 'School' but are a less intimidating form of a social gathering.

I hope this Go Fund Page will give the start I need to buy materials such as paint, canvas's, easels and find a suitable venue spaces and apply for my Advanced Diploma of Art Therapy to begin this journey for helping others through learning how to paint.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story:)
