Paige suffered multiple organ failure, organ rupture and frequent blood vessel ruptures throughout her digestive system and abdomen for over ten long years. Her spleen swelled to over 30 times its normal size and destroyed her blood quicker than her body could make it.
Her liver, starving and dying, produced chemicals which affected her thinking, and caused lung and congestive heart failure.
Doctors said it was "sufficiently rare that various treatment options could not be offered in Australia" but they would not support her overseas treatment for fears of "setting a precedent", though Paige is one of only a handful of patients ever seen with her condition.
For 11 years Paige suffered countless surgical intervention and endless pain until a cure was offered by Dr "Superman" Superina, the world leader in portal vein reconstruction surgery. The problem was getting Paige to Lurie Children's hospital in Chicago.
It was a race against time, and the Australian government refused to help. But normal people from all walks of life offered their talents, time and money, in abundance to help our little girl.
It became one of Australia's biggest fundraising campaigns for a single patient. Against the odds, kind people generously raised the funds to try and save her life.

Paige can now think clearly, move normally and her blood counts are no longer critical. Her liver, heart and lung function are improving. She no longer lives on the edge, no longer suffers spontaneous and horrific blood loss, can now travel out of emergency range of a hospital and go to school like her brothers and sisters. And she loves it.
