My mom has been blind nearly 40 years. A hereditary eye condition called Retinitus Pigmentosa robs people of their vision slowly over time and by the time she was in her 30's she was totally blind. She was told she would never see again... this condition has no cure.
Second Sight has decided to defy what we were once told and give those with RP the chance to see again.
My mom has undergone the surgery necessary and is currently waitng for the activation of the device.
My mom has never seen her grandkids, and she has 15 of them. She has never seen her husband she has been married to for 13 years. She has not see what her two daughters have looked like since they were toddlers 40 years ago. The only visual memory she has had was from the 1970's. Oh how life has changed.
Imagine what this would mean for someone to be able to spend the rest of their life with the ability to decipher what her kids, husband and grandkids look like. To see the outline of objects, shapes and contrasted colors. To be able to feel as though her sense of independance can return to some level she has not known in many many years.
We are trying to help continue to raise funds to help with because the surgery had to be done in Minnesota and a lengthy stay in hotels and travel and food and other living expenses while her husband and her are undergoing this transformation into her new life.
