A fire that destroyed a small southwest Santa Rosa home Tuesday was accidental and may have been started by a space heater in the house, according to a fire investigator Wednesday.

The Todd Road fire displaced three adults and a boy and killed two family dogs trapped inside, said Cyndi Foreman, fire prevention officer for the Rincon Valley and Windsor fire districts.

The 10:15 a.m. blaze started in the back of the home, likely in a converted patio and laundry room being used as living space for one of the residents. It then spread throughout the estimated 1,000‑square‑foot house.

An investigation determined the fire was an accident and may be electrical and involve a space heater, but a final determination has yet to be made, Foreman said.

Resident Alvaro Ochoa, who was home at the time, saved one dog, a pitbull mix named Elephante, Foreman said. Two chihuahuas died in the fire.

Santa Rosa fire Battalion Chief Mark Basque arrived first and found the home engulfed, flames threatening nearby structures and a distraught Ochoa.

“He couldn’t get his pets. He took in some smoke, singed his hair. He refused medical care and was more concerned about his animals,” Basque said.

Firefighters from Rincon Valley, Santa Rosa and Gold Ridge responded and held the flames to the burning building despite the threat to at least three other residences, Foreman said. She estimated the loss of the home and contents at $250,000.

The property’s owner was listed as Todd Road LLC and renters were in the home that burned, including Grisella Escobar, Jose Chavez, their son and Ochoa, Foreman said. The Red Cross was helping the four with temporary housing aid.

The fire happened in the 1300 block of Todd Road, near Phillips Avenue and Llano Road, southwest of Santa Rosa.
