Latrines for Refugees, Uganda

Buy a Latrine - what could be better? Read on...

My name is Jeanne Ratzloff and I want to built latrines (toilets). For those of you who are laughing – stop it!

In 2009 I founded Peopleweaver as a United States registered 501(c)3 charity. We work with Congolese refugees living in the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Kyangwali's population is approximately 25,000. Many refugees have lived in Kyangwali for 20 years or more, many children know no other life.

The need for latrines is no laughing matter. Human waste has been implicated in the transmission of many infectious diseases including cholera, typhoid, infectious hepatitis, polio, cryptosporidiosis, and ascariasis. 2,000 children die each day from diarrhoeal diseases, according to UNICEF/WHO.

The lack of latrines and related illnesses also has a heavy economic cost. Lack of proper sanitation results in annual economic losses of $260 billion due to health costs and loss of output (too sick to work).*1 This loss of income means - less food, less education, less opportunity, less money to spend on preventative care - such as malaria nets.

Over a quarter of the refugee camps in Uganda have an insufficient number of latrines, i.e. there are greater than 20 people per latrine.*1 From what I’ve seen  in Kyangwali, the number is much higher. And from what I’ve seen of the existing latrines, most are very inadequate - many flies and ground that appears ready to cave in.

Personally I want to build latrines because I know many people in Kyangwali and care about them. I don't like it that they lack something so basic.  A few years ago while in Kyangwali I showed a 45-year-old friend the toilet in my room. Sofia, shown below,  had never seen a toilet and was amazed... and the fact she was amazed, pisses (excuse the pun) me off - she shouldn't be. I really don't want to think about all this every time I flush my nice, white toilet.  So, let's join hands and build latrines.

There is almost an unlimited need for latrines in Kyangwali. Let's start by building 200.

Thanks.
