OVWS - Grades Building Renovation
Founded in 2004, Orchard Valley Waldorf School (OVWS) is a non-denominational educational institution serving children from birth through Grade Eight in Montpelier, Vermont.
OVWS delivers proven educational programs that cultivate a love of learning. In harmony with the natural stages of child development, Orchard Valley awakens and educates the whole child by equally engaging the mind, enlivening the imagination, and strengthening the will.
OVWS is now seeking funding for modestly transformative renovations taking place this summer. These renovations repurpose current spaces in practical, cost effective and inspiring ways to reflect the school’s evolving needs. This investment will improve the learning environment for students, affirm the school’s commitment to its specialty teachers, and help to more fully fulfill Orchard Valley’s mission to awaken the highest potential in every child.
Orchard Valley is an arts-centered school which currently lacks a dedicated space for music and theater. The Great Space currently used for assemblies, music, rehearsals and performances is both too cramped and impractically located in the center of the Grades Building where its activities can be both disruptive to, and disrupted by, activities in the surrounding classrooms. A major benefit to the renovations is the creation of a quieter, more serene, and less chaotic environment in which students can more easily focus on their work.
By creating an additional classroom in the Grades Building, the renovations will free the Canvas Yurt currently used as a classroom. Dedicating the Yurt to music, class plays, and assemblies will be an inspiration to our community which revolves around the arts. The Yurt is an uplifting space in which to create beauty and Waldorf-inspired social harmony. Having such a space will also greatly expand our ability to welcome visiting performers and teachers; and we are eager to save money, time and energy currently spent busing students to hired spaces for rehearsals and performances.
Orchard Valley has long needed teaching spaces for its specialty teachers. The renovations will create such spaces for the Music, Woodworking, and Handwork Teachers and for the Educational Support Staff who now sometimes tutor students in the corridors. When it is too icy outside, the Yurt will enable the Movement Teacher to hold classes inside. This renovation repurposes spaces our dedicated specialty teachers have long needed to support the core programs they provide for our community. It also brings the office of the Pedagogical Chair into the Grades Building where her specialized skills will be of great value. Additionally, the renovation creates essential administrative office, copying, and storage spaces.
The entire estimated cost for these Phase 1 renovations is $39,314. Members of the Board of Trustees have pledged at least $12,000 towards this cost. Other community members have also pledged contributions. Please help us bridge the gap. Thank you!
