Outsiders - A Journey Through Homelessness

Donation protected

Outsiders is a documentary photography project which aimed to capture a snapshot of homelessness in modern Britain. Homelessness in this case is taken in a broad sense to mean anyone who does not have access to a safe, stable and habitable home environment. This can include people who are sleeping rough, are sofa surfing or are living in substandard housing. The project was done in partnership with the charity Shelter and with cooperation from a number of other charities including Big Issue, Inspiring Change Manchester and Back on Track.

The main themes for the project were developed in collaboration with people who had lived experience of homelessness, and the goals were fourfold: to raise public awareness of the issues around homelessness and substandard housing, to amplify the voices of those with lived experience, to break down barriers and encourage members of the public to interact with those they see who are experiencing homelessness, and as a call to action.

The book of the photography and testimony from the project will be available from Bluecoat Press in September 2022, and an exhibition is planned for the Williamson Art Gallery which will run for three months from October 2023.
