What is Out of the Box?
It’s a project by students from Michigan State University studying journalism, advertising, design, and video production. We’re part of the Media Sandbox, the creative curriculum and community in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences.
The Goal
We want to give back to the communities in the great state of Michigan this year, and challenge you to lend a hand as well!
During our spring break, we are planning on helping an organization called Pictures of Hope. Started by Michigan-based photojournalist Linda Solomon, Pictures of Hope aims to show each homeless child that there is hope and they are not forgotten. These children are given the opportunity to use digital cameras and shoot their dreams, and the photos they take are later printed and sold as cards.
We will be traveling to homeless shelters around mid-Michigan and helping kids capture their dreams through the art of photography. During our break, we will meet with kids at different shelters, and help them use cameras that are donated to Pictures of Hope. We will also be rebranding the organization, which entails creating a website, logo, marketing materials and a GoFundMe page. We will be filming testimonials from kids affected by the program that will be featured content on the organization's website as well.
We are also challenging our followers to give back to the community by showing that every act of kindness, big or small, leaves a positive impact on communities in our state.
The Engagement
During our spring break, we will challenge our followers and encourage them to get involved and lend a hand to someone in their community. By using the hashtag #lendmihand, we want to see the good deeds that YOU are performing– whether it's paying for someone's coffee, or saying "hello" to someone you don't know.
Take a picture with your hand in the shape of the Mitten, tag us (@msuoutofthebox) and make sure to use the hashtag #lendmihand! We'll share your posts on our official social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
What we need...
-Money to help the non-profits: Having already helped a nonprofit called Detroit Helping Detroit, and we'll soon be helping Pictures of Hope, we need funds to help the organizations with the new marketing materials and websites we're creating for them. We want to take care of their website costs for one full year, as well as costs for printed banners and other marketing materials that would normally be an expense to these organizations.
-Gas: We need fuel! We'll be traveling around mid-Michigan everyday for a week and will need to make sure we can get to each shelter
Every dollar we do not use will be divided amongst Detroit Helping Detroit and Pictures of Hope. We will only use what we need, the rest we want to use to help others.

Each day during the project, we will release video and pictorial updates our social media pages so you will know what we're doing and how we're doing it.
