The G.I. Grill
Donation protected
Right after selling my used grill on craigslist, I got this email:
I am a Veteran, living at the Armed Forces Retirement Home here in DC (Old Soldiers' Home- https://www.afrh.gov/afrh/wash/washcampus.htm ). Though they serve three meals a day, some of us love a grilled steak or burger. I am a young 64, but the average age is 88, with a couple of centenarians resident.
Would you consider donating your grill? I am here because of my lack of money. I could pay $50, but would love to have a few bucks for meat, and keep the gas bottles full!
Thanks,

Let's get serious, folks. They don't need my old grill. They need this bad boy (Cook's Illustrated's top-rated gas grill). They also need a summer's worth of red meat. (Thinking the grill bundle would suit them just fine. It's $725). The total for a new grill and a freezer full of beef will be ~$1200. That means that only 120 people have to give $10. No doubt that Memorial Day weekend is one of the great grilling and beer drinking holidays that we have - take a minute to give a little to those that we should be thinking of.
It's not the world's most serious problem. But it's a solvable one. Let's do this.
UPDATE: You guys have all been so awesome, we're gonna stretch our goal so that we can get a grill cover, some tools, and a supply of propane. $1400...IT'S ON.
