Organic Farming in Uganda
From June 1-15, 2017, I will be embarking on my first of what will hopefully be many volunteering missions across the globe. I'll be traveling to rural Uganda near the Mabira Forest, just miles from the source of the Nile River on Lake Victoria, to try my hand at organic farming and agriculture. I'll be working side by side with Ugandan farmers to promote local nutrition, conservation and income generation.
After watching a documentary on extreme poverty (Living On One Dollar - available on Netflix), I was inspired to learn more. After visiting the suggested literature, I stumbled upon the Bamboo organization (a part of The Global Volunteering Network ), which offers experiential volunteering opportunities across the globe. Those of you who know me well also know some of my passions, and when I found the opportunity to help the local economy via orgranic farming and agriculture - I couldn't resist.
While on location, I'll be staying in a room provided by the organization. The electricity will be spotty and intermittent, and there's no running water, but I'll undoubtedly gain an appreciation for things that I've taken for granted my entire life.
I realize that I can't take everyone with me, so in addition to following my adventures on my WordPress blog , I am using GoFundMe as a way for people to be a part of this experience.
I am aiming to raise $3,000 for this experience, which will be put towards the following:
$250 - registration fee to secure the spot in the program
$990 - two weeks of accomodation, meals and airport pickup ($495/week)
$1,250 - round trip flight expense from NYC > Entebbe, Uganda > Boston (it is ~$200 cheaper to fly out of NYC)
$510 of the remaining money to the goal will be used as: A) fund in the event of emergency.
B) all leftover money will be used to purchase supplies and equipment on behalf of the Ugandan farmers I will be spending my time with.
On my way back to the states, I'll be spending a long weekend in Cape Town, South Africa as a way to decompress and reflect upon my experience before returning full throttle to the Western world.
100% of the funds raised here will be going directly to the Uganda experience only (I am personally financing the South Africa stint), and anything raised over my goal will be put directly towards the local economy in Uganda. The American dollar goes a long way in helping these people, as more than 34% of the population subsist on less than $1,90 a day (2013).
So I could not mean it any more when I say that any donation, no matter how big or small, makes a difference!
I'll be documenting my travels via Instagram (@TheUxDeluxe ) and via WordPress so you'll be able to follow me during my journey - from preparation, to travel, to farming - and beyond!
THANK YOU for your support!
