Orange-bellied Parrot Volunteers

The Orange-bellied Parrot is critically endangered, and with a wild adult population with fewer than 15, it is one of the most threatened birds in the world.

A vital part of the recovery program has been the involvement of volunteers who have observed the birds and collected important information each year since 1992 at Melaleuca in south west Tasmania.  Volunteer observers have also conducted searches along the Tasmanian west coast and Bass Strait Islands to find birds on the northern migration (March-May).

My name is Mark Holdsworth and I have been involved with the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Program since 1980. My goal is to raise at least $30,000 to support our amazing volunteers who work so hard on Orange-bellied Parrot projects in Tasmania.

I’m calling on everyone who cares about the Orange-bellied Parrot and the importance of volunteer involvement in Threatened Species programs to continue to contribute to this campaign so volunteers are able to continue their important work and receive the support they need. By contributing to this important cause I will ensure that information about our precious bird continues to be shared to everyone.

My target for the 2019/20 season is to support the autumn migration surveys. Comprehensive searches have not been conducted for over a decade and we need to get as many people as possible looking for birds so we can learn what their requirements are during migration. Funding will help pay for observers to travel to remote areas including off-shore islands, training and field supplies. I hope you will join me in continuing the support for these important projects.
