Opt Outside for Otto

Donation protected
Otto Isenberg was born and raised in Central New York, a place where nature's four seasons can be enjoyed to the fullest.  Should you choose to opt outside in our neck of the woods, it is likely you would quickly become acquainted with Otto - and what a privilege that would be!

He could be your guide "Shepard" during the  85+ mile CNY Ride for Missing Children . He could be the person passing you a puck as a member of the Hockey Fights Type 1 Diabetes hockey team. He could be the friendly person you meet as you hike or kayak your way through the beautiful Adirondack Park.

On behalf of us who know him, here is what you could expect if you crossed paths with Otto: someone who can strike up a conversation in an instant; someone who listens intently; and someone who values community, health and wellness, the environment, and above all the needs of others.

This summer, Otto was diagnosed with Stage 4, non-Hodgkins lymphoma of the bone - the most rare form of bone cancer. Otto is currently undergoing chemo treatment and is showing nothing but strength, optimism and a continued commitment being outdoors - he has even managed to ride his bike this fall! To those that know Otto, this is of course no surprise - after all, these are the traits that make him uniquely "Otto" and loved by many.

As a grateful gesture to thank Otto for all of his community support over the years, on Black Friday (November 23, 2018)  we are mobilizing a group of cyclists to raise money for Otto and his family during this trying (and unexpectedly expensive) time.

As many members of our cycling community are loyal supporters and customers of the REI Co-op,  and since Otto's passion for supporting the community is almost always paired with enjoying the great outdoors, we thought it quite fitting to link up with the "Opt Outside" Campaign . As such, we are calling our event, "Opt Outside for Otto ."

So press that donate button.

Share this link to your friends, family and fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

And if you can't join us on November 23rd to ride Otto's favorite bike route, we hope you can find a way for you and your loved ones to Opt Outside!
