Young girl hit by SUV on her way to school

As I drove out of my driveway this morning, I was greeted by flashing lights. I could see police tape, with a few officer blocking the road. A young girl was hit by an SUV in the early hours on her way to the bus stop. She was thrown into the ditch on the right side of the road. This ditch was very deep, muddy and flooded. Luckily she was able to get help and was transported to the hospital however the driver is yet to be found.  The area where she was hit was in front of a small neighborhood, off a country road. There are no street lights or sidewalks. This path is used by many people to get to the bus stop, or to the other neighborhood. Small children walk this path to get to the pickup/drop off of the school bus. The path is wet, muddy and the grass is never properly maintained by the county. It is so muddy, many people walk on the road. Many neighbors, including myself have taken to mowing the path so that people can more safely and comfortably travel, but it's not enough. The neighborhood has been asking for a sidewalk since I've lived here. The county has recently opened a park and a public baseball field, only increasing the foot traffic. The lack of a sidewalk is putting children at risk and this will only happen again if a sidewalk is not installed.  If the county won't do it, we will pay for it ourselves. Please help protect people like this young girl. No child should be unsafe going to school!
