It's Now or Never...

After recovering from a stroke, a lengthy struggle to get free from the grip of alcoholism, and a recent death, I've been thinking more about Mary Oliver's direct and poignant question, "...what do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

For me, it has always been writing, but more to this, writing about those wild places that bring us closer to who we are. Experiencing the wildness of place and the capacity of connection are the very things I want to share with the world.

I've spent the past 5 years building a freelance writing business, and it has been a lot of hard work and uncertainty. When it all fell apart in 2017, I was forced to rely on savings. And when the savings was spent, I've had to humble myself even more by going to food banks and selling my car. I'm not unlike so many others out there.

In some ways, this leveling of pride has allowed me to break away from limited thinking and go for what it is that's been calling me.

Today, I am working my butt off to get my freelance work back off the ground. I am hopeful, but it is a slow endeavor. The seed money I can gather seems to be swallowed up by basics, and unlike other businesses, freelancers don't seem to get loans.

My goal for 2019 is to really focus intently on my writing by getting rid of overhead and outfitting myself for travel. I have a few good clients, a book of poetry almost completed, a strange novel in its infancy, and a limited edition essay and photo book that will be about, of all things, travels into wild places.

This is a HUGE leap from staying stuck in my old limited creative life, but after so much has happened, these stories need to be shared.

I'm asking for some help from my friends to get this endeavor going.

The results will be that I can write and photograph wild places in hopes of capturing their spirit and the perils they face, as well as continuing to work as a freelance writer.

I am raising money to buy a used/vintage working RV and laptop so that I can make this happen.

In exchange, I will send you my first book of poetry, Badlands; for gifts over $200, a copy of my first book of essays and photographs (TBD) or the new collection of poems, Empire of Moths. If you would rather consider your gift a loan, we can work together on a timeline for repayment. Either way, you are so appreciated.

I know this ask is difficult. There is much need in the world and more causes than any one of us can hope to help, but I cannot achieve this dream and vision without help. So, I thank you from my heart that you would consider.

Love & gratitude,

In the final stretch of saving. I've been writing often and taking photos and videos to share with everyone. I hope you have enjoyed them.

Once I get through my surgery in April, I can start making decisions about certain things, as well as ramping up on travel. It's been a very tight month, but I'm hoping that will change soon.

Thanks so much for your support. <3

Dear friends, It has been so freeing to be able to work remotely with my new laptop, which I couldn't have afforded without the help of all of you. Thank you once again for allowing me to work and write!

Next week, I am planning on taking the dogs somewhere wild and writing about the experience, as well as doing some research on a Central AZ mountain lion project I am taking on. This, along with continuing to focus more intentionally on creative writing has been my life's dream. <3 I'd love to hear more from you about yours.

Once again, thank you so much for your generosity, emails, and shares. It means the world.

Love & thanks,

Thank you to those who have contributed or sent good wishes. I was able to purchase a laptop (yay!!) and get set up for writing remotely. Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart. <3

My next project is about population increase and its impact on Arizona's mountain lion population in Central Phoenix, as well as "open hunting" laws.

The use of the laptop will allow me to head to remote sites and work. Thanks again.

Love and gratitude, Aleah
