One Walk London 2018
Two and half years ago, my son Thomas, was diagonised with Type 1 Diabetes. The exact cause is unknown. Usually, the body's own immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Despite active research, type 1 diabetes has no cure. Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels with insulin, diet and lifestyle to prevent complications.
Consequently, it has been a very steep learning curve that we have been on with continuous finger pricking to check his blood glucose, carbohydrate counting and a minimum of 4 insulin injections a day depending if he's in a "hypo" or a "hyper".
Currently, there are 400,000 people in the UK with type 1 diabetes, over 29,000 of them are children! Therefore Thomas and I are walking 10k over at 6 bridges along the River Thames, united with hundreds of like-minded others towards a future without type 1 diabetes.
One Walk London 2018 is a fun and family-friendly event where the money that we raise will go towards the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) charity which funds research to cure, treat and prevent type 1. It works with government, academia and industry to accelerate research in the UK and within healthcare policy, to ensure that the outcomes of research are delivered to people with type 1 in the UK.
