This year I was blessed to spend 3 weeks in Montego Bay, Jamaica. I met many special Jamaicans that ensured that my stay on their island was perfect. I was catered to, hand and foot. I was brought fruit platters to my room and my wish was their command. But what lives do these wonderful people really live? These Jamaicans remind us, the tourist, that we DESERVE a break and we have EARNED our vacation. What about them? What about what they deserve?
During my time in Jamaica I made many friendships, but 5 hold a very special place in my heart. In July, 2 out of the 5, miraculously survived an extremely dangerous and life-threatening car accident. These 2 young men, woke up that day thinking they would have a wonderful day at work, but instead, that morning on their way to work, their driver's brakes gave out and they drove off a cliff. They were stopped and saved by dangling in a tree. They were saved and they recovered. They have tried desperately to resume their regular life. The 3rd person I met this summer, Bianka, a beautiful, young girl was not as lucky. She and her boyfriend were driving to the river, got into a car accident and both died. These car accidents happen more often than we hear about. People lose their lives in Jamaica and no one helps these families that are left behind to pick up the pieces of their lives. These people need stricter road regulations, need security, and deserve to live full, happy lives!!!These Jamaicans struggle to make ends meet. They live without proper electricity, if they lose their job, they cannot afford to travel on a bus or even buy food. The working Jamaican lives from pay check to pay check, if they are lucky, but with their pay, they are also feeding their extended family members that are struggling even more.
