“One Health: Living and surviving the interface” - Why does One Health matter?

Sustainable use of natural resources, protection of ecosystems as a whole, combating of emerging zoonoses and stopping biodiversity loss. People, wildlife, livestock and the environment - if one goes down, everyone is impacted, as we are all in this together. This is what the well-established One Health-concept is all about.

The student workshop “One Health: Living and surviving the interface” is aimed to connect students with leading scientists and professionals to help them shape their study and career path and to teach them about the newest research and policies in the field of One Health.

Crucial components include combat of emerging zoonoses, striving for a sustainable use of natural resources, protection of ecosystems as a whole and a halt to biodiversity loss. Hence, acute and long-term disasters such as zoonotic outbreaks of avian influenza, SARS or MERS, nuclear meltdown, oil spills do not only threaten people, but global health as such. Research into the prevention, management and long-term consequences of such disasters is crucial in order to protect global health and biodiversity.
The scientific course will consist of numerous lectures, group working sessions on specific problems, presentations of student work, panel discussions and networking opportunities.

Who will be involved?

The plenary meeting room at the conference location fits up to 120 people. Forty students will be carefully selected by the organising committee through applications composed of a resume, a letter of reference and a motivation letter. These students will be accommodated at the conference centre together with twelve to fifteen professionals from Europe and beyond. Only selected students will attend the small group working sessions and have the opportunity to present their work. This setting provides students the opportunity to connect with leading scientists and professionals to help them shape their study and career path and to teach them about the latest research and policies in the field of One Health. The plenary sessions are open to all participants. Furthermore, plenary sessions can be streamed live and recorded, allowing students from all over the world to participate.

We invite PhD-students and residents, as well as BSc- (in their final year) and MSc-students studying human and veterinary medicine, pharmacology, biology, ecology, environmental law, social sciences, et cetera. They will be carefully selected by the organizing committee through applications composed of a resume, a letter of reference and a motivation letter.

The speakers are top level scientists and highly skilled professionals who can passionately share their work and experience with the participants.
