OMEGA WOLAKOTA
Servant Leadership, a term coined by Robert Greenleaf, is a philosophy of leadership that achieves results by placing priorty on serving the needs of others. Servant leaders are identified by their compassion, courage, and humility. The term "Omega" is the last letter of the Greek alphabet and reminds us that to lead effectively we must often choose to be servants and place ourselves alongside and behind others. We draw inspiration from servant leaders throughout history such as Martin Luther King, Jr, Nicholas Black Elk, Yeshua, Helen Keller, Crazy Horse, Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela, and Frank Fools Crow.
Wolakota is a Lakota word that means strenth through unity.
OMEGA WOLAKOTA is a week-long cultural immersion and service-learning experience that brings teens and young adults together from Southeast Michigan/Northwest ohio and Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for an encounter of life -changing interaction and personal growth. OMEGA WOLAKOTA, a program of Omega Youth Empowerment, is facilitated by Jon Schoonmaker, MA, LPC and has been happening on Pine Ridge Reservation since 2002.
The hallmark of OMEGA WOLAKOTA is building relationships that are grounded in mutual respect and servant leadership. We believe the greatest service we can offer to another is friendship. The friendships that are forged through cultural exchange druing OMEGA WOLAKOTA are sustained through continued contact and meaningful support long after the experience is over. Omega Youth Empowerment assists in facilitating this continued connection.
Confident in the power of friendship, the group endeavors to build unique and meaningful relationships with children, teens, and families on the Reservation through spontaneous and planned community interaction, works of service, and immersion in the Lakota community.
Omega Youth Empowerment has established a significant relationship with the students of Wounded Knee District School. We are fully invested in a long-term commitment to the students and the community.

Omega Youth Empowerment offers the opportunity for Adventure-Based Therapeutic Interventions in the counseling process to meet the needs of individuals, couples and families who would benefit from adventure-based outcomes. Key outcomes include trust building, goal setting, managing challenges/stress, problem solving, confidence building, and increased resilience.
