My best friend and I are Boston-based college grads and proud moms to a 3-year-old Maine Coon named Oliver. Oliver is an energetic, rambunctious ball of fluff who loves to play and be in the company of humans.
One minute, he'll playfully pounce out at you from under the coffee table, and the next minute, he'll curl up with you in bed and fall asleep on your pillow. Oliver truly is the best furry companion we could ask for, but he has one significant flaw: his chronic sneezing.
Ever since we adopted Oliver at 12 weeks old, he's had the 'sniffles.' We've taken him to vets and given him medicine for what seemed to be a never-ending cold, consisting of frequent sneeze attacks and a runny nose all year round. It wasn't until Oliver was undergoing a dental cleaning when the vet finally discovered a nickel-sized hole in Oliver's soft palate.
We were told that Oliver was likely born with this defect, which causes him major discomfort when eating or drinking. Food and water often get stuck inside the hole, resulting in cringeworthy choking noises and coughing or sneezing up mucus.
We're hoping to relieve Oliver's discomfort and put his chronic sneezing to rest by raising money for surgery, which will close the hole in his soft palate. Oliver has brought so much warmth into our lives that he deserves the same love and care in return.
