Clean Drinking Water for all Ojai!

Tax deductible
This year, many of the children of the learning community, Rock Tree Sky, came together to discuss how our community can make a measurable difference in this world. After much discussion and brainstorming, we became focused on the ubiquitous single-use plastic water bottle: the poster-child for unsustainable.

We watched short documentaries on water bottles and water as a resource, we looked at pictures of the giant islands of plastic floating in our oceans, and we launched a multi-faceted campaign to decrease the use of single-use plastic water bottles in our little town of Ojai.

Some of the many tasks the learners at Rock Tree Sky engaged in include:

- Gathering water samples from the water fountains at our public parks.
- Running controlled taste tests of these samples to see if poor water quality is part of the problem.
- Taking the water to be professionally tested to discover what contaminants may or may not be present.
- Doing research of filtration systems and water bottle refill stations.
- Meeting with city managers to discuss the installation of filtered water stations in our local parks.

Our conclusions:

-While the publicly available water does not contain levels of contaminants the EPA has identified has hazardous to our health, the water does consistently score low on blind taste tests.
- We want to donate water filters to the city to be installed at all public water sources and a water bottle refill station to be installed at Libbey Park.
- We also want to raise awareness in our community through multi-media campaigns of both the need to reduce single-use plastics and the widely available free water, which we plan to improve through filtration.

In order to meet our goals, including the donation, installation, and maintenance of water filters in water fountains throughout the city of Ojai, we need your support!

Your tax deductible donations to Rock Tree Sky will go into a special account to support our efforts to increase the water quality in Ojai and decrease single-use plastics.

Rock Tree Sky, in Ojai California, is a program for homeschoolers and unschoolers ages 4 to 18 that gives children the freedom and responsibility to direct their education and govern their own learning community.

At Rock Tree Sky we allow the space for the unfolding of inquisitiveness and exploration. We recognize that humans are naturally curious, intelligent creatures and we respect children’s ability to construct their own knowledge. We trust a child’s personal sense of pacing and interest to guide us in what we explore together.
