OF COD & RUM: THE NEWFOUNDLAND CONNECTION

Donation protected
My name is Patricia Scarlett.  I was born in Jamaica, raised in Montreal, Quebec and currently call Toronto home.  Jamaica's national motto, "Out of many, one people" inspired me to develop a package of films that explore the intersectionality of cultures.    OF COD AND RUM: THE NEWFOUNDLAND CONNECTION --https://www.facebook.com/OfCodAndRum2018/ --  is the first documentary in this film package.

My journey in film and television began at TVOntario (TVO) where I worked as an International Sales Executive.  In this role,  I travelled extensively  to license TVOntario's propriety productions all around the world.   After I left TVO, I established a distribution company representing indie producers of documentaries, children's and arts programs.   Experience in sales and distribution was the foundation that  allowed me to move  into independent production.  To date, I have produced and/or executive produced the following programs:  CRAZY OPERA (animated Christmas special co-produced with Studio Carnitoons, a Paris-based company); MIGHTY MACHINES (Season II); RASTAFARI THEN AND NOW: A MESSAGE FROM JAMAICA; and RASTA: A SOUL'S JOURNEY -- https://rastajourney.com/.

My first encounter with Newfoundland happened when I cycled across Atlantic Canada many years ago.  My final stop on the journey was Newfoundland.  Thus began my love affair with THE ROCK, the other ROCK.  Jamaica is also known as THE ROCK.    Fastforward 8 years and I married a Newfoundlander with roots in Witless Bay.  Since then,  Newfoundland has been my second home.

Our production team recently returned from Jamaica where we completed shooting the second half of our documentary feature, OF COD AND RUM: THE NEWFOUNDLAND CONNECTION.  The film explores the history and cultural links between Newfoundland and Jamaica through the salt cod and rum trades.  The story  unfolds through the encounters and interviews, of the film's lead, Al St Louis, a spoken word artist.  The film brings something new to the screen as it explore the  links between two islands, one a province, the other, a country,  that seemingly have little in common.

The funds are needed immediately in order to start the post-production process in order to move the film towards completion.  We plan on screening the film in St. John's and communities around St. John's.

Your support will enable our team to complete a project that has been 3 years in the making.  Further, it will help audiences to learn something new about their world.
