Odeline's medical trip to Haiti

Donation protected
My name is Odeline and I was born in Haiti. I was adopted at three years old by an American family and live in the United States. I am 16 now and, due to college courses, will be graduating from high school this June. My dream in life is to become a Nurse Practitioner and travel back to Haiti to practice at some point.

To that end, I recently completed a high school course I designed myself called, “Preventing and Treating Medical Issues with Environmental Impacts in Haiti.”

I currently participate in an incredible internship at a local hospital, where I get to work directly with medical staff, caring for patients and their guests.

I applied for the Haiti International Clinical Apprenticeship Program (HICAP) through the Colline Foundation. I got accepted and am excited to have the opportunity to return to Haiti so early in my education this summer.

According to the Colline Foundation’s website (http://www.collinefoundation.org/hicap), “The goal of this program is to provide every participant with an introduction to the practice of medicine in a developing country and to give them the tools to think critically about finding sustainable solutions to the underlying issues faced by a healthcare system with limited resources.”

The problem is that my father lost his job recently. Honestly, it would have been a stretch to pay for the program in its entirety even if he hadn’t lost his job. Furthermore, the primary scholarship for the program is only open to those who are in their final years of college. At this point, finances are the only barrier that could stop me from living this part of my dream.

I am hoping to raise a total of $7,000.00 by May 1st, 2017 (A deposit is deposit required by April 1, 2017). This will cover the following:

$4,800.00: The cost of the program itself

$2,200.00: Travel, including flights, a hotel in Florida on both ends of trip, travel insurance, passport, parental escort to Florida if necessary, and incidentals, plus a small cushion.

This PDF offers more details about the apprenticeship and its fees:

I will send regular updates to donors, of course.

Thank you so much for considering a donation to this apprenticeship. Besides returning to my country, learning from my fellow Haitians, and being able to give back in some small way to my fellow Haitians, this apprenticeship will give me much needed experience in nursing.

Kind Regards,

Odeline
