Objection to 24 hr Drive Thru

Hi, thanks for checking out our page. We are a group of local residents who strenuously object to the proposed fast food drive thru facility at Skerries Point shopping centre. We don’t feel this amenity would add any value to our lovely community, quite the opposite in fact. Therefore, to strenghten our chances alongside our individual objections, we wish to employ a Consultant Planner. Here are some reasons why we need your help!
Traffic and Transport
A professional traffic survey recently carried out anticipates a 40% increase in traffic once the new road opens. This alone will impact on local air quality, as well as the safety of pedestrians, particularly local school children. Idling cars queuing in the drive thru will only worsen the situation, not to mention the trucks carrying out regular food deliveries, bin collections etc at an already narrow junction. This junction is currently the only entrance to the entire Skerries Point commercial development and the addition of the drive thru presents a further increased risk of a serious road traffic accident occurring.
Parking
The proposed development has seating for 125 customers, so additional parking spaces will be required to facilitate some of these customers. With no parking available on the proposed site itself, it has been suggested that 6 spaces be allocated in the Skerries Point carpark. This already caters for the customers of a neighbouring crèche, gym, take away, vets, hair salon, chemist, supermarket and a bike shop. The new two story development will undoubtedly use more than the suggested 6 spaces and the high volume of car traffic will impede the existing, established businesses ability to trade.
Proof of Need
The planning report claims there are no fast food outlets currently providing a sit in service in the existing development, which is completely false. Jimmy’s take away, a stone’s throw away from the proposed development, offers a sit in service in addition to their carry out service. Jimmy’s freshly prepared food and varied menu has been very well received by local residents, and there is no evidence to suggest there is further need for additional services of this kind in the vicinity. As well as the business being a valuable amenity to the town, Jimmy’s also gives back to the community through fund raising efforts supporting local causes and regularly donating to Skerries RNLI.
Environment & Levels of Disturbance
In terms of environmental impact, many people have expressed concern over the level of packaging and waste potentially being dumped on the surrounding areas near the site, the green in Kelly's bay directly across the road for example.
Outdoor seating will be provided at the new site, further increasing noise levels for nearby residents, particularly in the later hours. It has been confirmed that the business has applied for 24 hour opening hours . These hours run the risk of potentially inebriated customers gravitating to the establishment after hours, when other food businesses operating in the town under traditional hours will be closed. This level of disturbance would have a detrimental impact on nearby residences.

We have been advised that our best chance at successfully opposing this development is to engage a professional planner to compose and submit the most robust objection from the community. The neccesary fees involved in this process are €1,500 and ideally the planner should commence work in early June, so time is running out!
