German Missions

Dear Friends and Family

For several years now, Bill and I have been waiting for God to show us when His timing would be  for our family to go on missions. Finally, the door has been opened. But we are getting a late start.

In February, we were approached by our Creative Arts Pastor to pray about going to Germany. God has a funny way of showing you what he wants you to do. The pastor said that the host church in Cologne, Germany wanted a country band with line dancing for their team this year. We all started laughing and then proceeded to pray. With Bill's sound background, my dance skills and Lilly's willingness to do whatever is before her, it didn't take long for us to know the answer.

Since all of you know that the Largins are huge history buffs. Here is your history lesson. Cologne is the oldest major city in Germany, founded in 50 AD by the Roman Empress Agrippina. The Romans actually brought Christianity to Cologne and since the 12th century, Cologne has been the fourth catholic metropolis in addition to Jerusalem, Byzantium and Rome to bear the designation "Sancta" (holy) in the city name: "Holy Cologne, faithful daughter of the Roman church by the grace of God". They built the largest cathedral in Europe, the Dom, to show its status. But there was no spiritual foundation for this church and the citizens had had enough of the secular powers of their so-called spiritual lords. In 1396, the Cologne guild proclaimed their constitution with a mayor and city council. Since then, Cologne like most of Europe has become "post Christian", a sort of "been there, done that" attitude that has left God standing at its gate waiting to be invited in.

Another religion began to rise in the 21st century, Islam. In 2010,  the skyline that once proudly displayed the largest cathedral in Europe now shares it with Germany's largest mosque. There are over 120,000 muslims living in Cologne, most are of Turkish descent and have lived in the shadows of the catholic cathedral all their lives.

Both of these religions, Islam and secularism, have dominated over the past couple of decades throughout Europe. To reach them we must show them the love of Christ and freedom He has given us in our everyday lives. To most Germans, Christians are foolish people who choose the unknown over the known. Students in classes are ridiculed by teachers and peers alike. The government requires all high school aged kids to attend a government approved school and not be home schooled which means the bullying can be overwhelming. Our time spent over there will be more than just the country band, it will be prayer, witnessing and sharing God's love through serving.

Would you like to help us? We are believing God for the financial means to complete his calling to Germany. We need to have our commitment met by the end of May, so time is running short. We understand that some of you may not be able to contribute, so please join us in praying that God is preparing the field and that it will be ripe for harvest. Pray that we will be faithful to share our testimony with any that will listen and that we will be able to recall the german language that Bill and I both spoke fluently so many years ago. We pray the you too will be faithful to share your testimony this week with someone who needs to know that Christ is real and He is seeks to fill the void in their life.
