Oakridge Teen Health Center

Donation protected
Hackley Community Care (HCC) a non-profit 501(c)3 health center is partnering with Oakridge Public Schools to renovate 3,600 sq. ft. of space for a school based health center in the Oakridge Middle/High School. HCC has received funding from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to provide clinical services for the Teen Health Center at the Oakridge school site. This GoFundMe campaign will work in conjunction with our capital campaign to renovate the facility. The operation of the Teen Health Center will cost the district nothing.

Construction will begin in June of 2015 and continue over the summer. While the Teen Health Center is already in operation in a temporary space, the newly constructed Teen Health Center will open October 2015 and provide medical and mental health services. The health center will add dental services in 2016.

The Teen Health Center will serve youth ages 10-21 in the Oakridge school district during regular school hours and the Oakridge community after hours.

Improving the Health of Our Youth

The Teen Health Center will improve the health status of youth in the following areas based on data from state and local surveys:

* 13.5% of students are obese (MiPHY Data 2013-2014), (YRBS)
* 14.5% are overweight (BMI by age and sex)
* 27.1% are active 60 minutes/day
* 60.2% are exposed to second-hand smoke
* 19.5% have asthma
* 58.3% surveyed claimed to have had sexual intercourse in past 3 months

The Oakridge school district is located in a rural area of Muskegon County. Access to a primary care physician or the county health system is 30 miles via vehicle. Please visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/OakridgePS?ref=hl or the Oakridge Public Schools website http://www.oakridgeschools.org/ to learn more.

Why a School Based Health Center (SBHC)?

* To address the full spectrum of health issues that can function as barriers to learning and to case manage students receiving services elsewhere
* To reduce absences, as well as disciplinary action for students with behavioral health problems
* To help students concentrate in school and maintain healthy relationships with peers, teachers, and family

Once construction is complete, the site will have 3 medical exam rooms, 3 dental operatories, a lab, a nurse station, and mental health office. Staff will include a Physician Assistant, Nurse, Dentist, Dental Hygienist, and Behavioral Health Counselor. You can learn more about Hackley Community Care at www.hackleycommunitycare.org .

Your Donations

A Capital Campaign is already having success in seeking funding and donations from foundations, corporate entities, and individuals. Our goal is to visually acknowledge major donors on a donor wall within the Oakridge Teen Health Center. You can leave a legacy with your donation!

The Oakridge Teen Health Center will be a school and community health center. Everyone can be a stakeholder no matter how large or small the contribution. This GoFundMe campaign demonstrates community support and acknowledges the generous and caring community we have. Anyone can donate.
