My name is Valeria. I have created this page hoping I can help not only my uncle Alejandro Fernicola, but my aunt Maria Angélica Otero (Nenica) and his 3 children who live in Argentina. They don't know I have done this as I don´t want to get their hopes up.
10 years ago my uncle was diagnosed with Friedreich's
Ataxia. Friedreich's Ataxia to summarize, is an illness which causes progressive degeneration of the nervous tissue in the spinal cord, in particular sensory neurons essential for directing muscle movement of arms and legs.
He now has no movement coordination whatsoever, he has trouble swallowing, breathing, he is slowly loosing his eyesight and hearing, he can´t speak or write, and worst of all, as from last week, he lost his last bit of independence since he is not able to walk any more. My uncle has been using an old wheelchair but my auntie has no strength to push him around anymore and my uncle can not help because he has lost muscle strength on his arms. Daily activities have become a struggle, for example a simple task such as taking a bath is impossible. Getting into the bathtub on his own is now hopeless and my aunt cannot manage his weight.
Unfortunately their income does not allow them to pay for much, my auntie works full time in a job that doesn't pay enough and also works outside working hours. She still has to provide for her children, her youngest one is only 13. My uncle receives a small pension which only covers the rent. So they struggle to make ends meet at the end of the month.
Hopefully the money will be able to get him a light weight electric wheel chair, a mobile crane for lifting him out of bed and the rest would help my auntie pay for a nurse to come home and help at least a few hours a day. Unfortunately the present situation in Argentina makes all of this things unaffordable for them.
My uncle is an exceptional person, I admire how he has coped with this terrible situation and how he has always put his family first rather than his illness. I feel like this can help him have a better quality of life and somehow make his life and his family´s a little bit easier, even though is a degenerative disease that will continue to deteriorate.
