Days for Girls - Nyeri, Kenya

As many of you know, we have been spending time at St. Mary's School for Boys and Child Rescue Center over the past few summers. This began through the Lasallian mission and La Salle University Service Trips.
After running into another group from the United States while visiting the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Brother Francis of St. Mary's had a new idea for us. The group we met was in Kenya were educating girls and women on health and their menstrual cycle and distributing sustainable feminine hygiene kits through the non-profit, Days for Girls (daysforgirls.org).
With this newly-learned mission in mind and Brother Francis' drive to assist the girls in the community, we returned to St. Mary's in June 2017 and were able to provide almost 300 girls in 3 different schools with sustainable feminine hygiene kits that last for 2-3 years. Without a way for these girls to manage their menstrual cycle, many are stuck missing multiple days of school per month or using materials/items in place of feminine hygiene products.
Last summer, we were able to raise at little as $3 to provide a kit for each girl. These kids were hand-sewn by volunteers throughout the United States. This year, we are instead purchasing kits from a Days for Girls Enterprise located within Kenya. The benefit of this is that local women are employed and this will further assist the economy within Kenya. Because of how these Enterprises work to assit the comminuties in which they are located, the kits are now $8 for each girl. Although this is a greater amount to provide for one girl, this amount will now provide sustainable feminine hygiene products for one girl for 2-3 years as well as provide an income for local women.
Our hope is to be able to raise enough money for atleast 125 girls which will provide for the girls in the 3 previous schools, who are now ready to receive these kits. Also, the Touch A Child's Heart (TACH) Club, which was initiated at St. Mary's, will be alongside us this year to begin their launch of You For Her which fully supports and extends this work with Days for Girls that we began last year. Our hope is they are able to watch us model the process and this will result in a sustainable program within the community of Nyeri, Kenya.
