Nixon Playground
Nixon Elementary School (2121 N Keeler Ave) in Hermosa, Chicago, is in dire need of a new playground! The existing playground is over 20 years old and in terrible shape! Over 30 children have allegedly been injured on the existing equipment and there are holes, rust, and graffiti covering the playground.
The Hermosa Neighborhood Association (HNA) has tried to work with the school and CPS to get funding for a new playground but there are no funds. HNA has secured a grant with KaBOOM! for over $100,000 and we are working with the Alderman to get the old playground removed.
A part of the grant is a "community buy-in" requirement of $8,500. We, as well as Padres Activitos de Nixon (a parent-led group), have various fundraisers planned but our $500 GoFundMe goal will get us a long way toward reaching our total. We have raised $2,500 thus far and have various fundraisers planned through the spring and early summer.

This is a hole that has injured several students, permanently scaring them. Parents patched up the hole with wood because CPS refused to fix the unsafe hazard. 
The playground is over 20 years old and covered in black paint to cover up graffiti. 
HNA and the parents of Nixon regularly clean up the school. We have tremendous pride in Nixon and its student body. 
The playground is covered in rust, a potential tetanus health issue for students. 
Aidan Salgado, a 7 year old student at Nixon, fell through the hole (shown above) and bled profusely. He was taken to the hospital for new shots and now has a permanent scar from the incident. His case is not the only one.
