I met Charles and Jennie about a year and a half ago. I was installing a roof in February (yes, February). Charles and Jennie were outside raking leaves after the snow melted. It was an unusually warm winter that year. This particular day was well into the 40’s.
As I watched them, I noticed that their gutters were filled to the brim with debris so I grabbed my ladder and went over to offer to clean them out for them. That’s when I discovered that Charles and Jennie are both hearing-impaired. As I dug out their gutters, I discovered a few more things. Charles and Jennie were in need of a roof that didn’t leak, gutters that properly shed water away from the house, new siding to keep their home water tight, and new windows that they could actually open and close.
Their home was built around 1949. Most of the windows are wood and rotted beyond repair. The metal siding was installed over the original wood lap siding which has deteriorated beneath it. The gutters are no longer pitched correctly and water spills over the top of them when it rains causing unwanted erosion to the yard. Since the drainage system is inadequate, they fall victim to a wet basement every time it rains. The property values around them have skyrocketed, which effects their property taxes every year. In the last 10 years alone, property taxes have climbed an average of 4.5%. Insurance rates for an older home tend to be higher as well because the property is considered “high risk” for loss. All of these problems just build up and the cost involved to correct them became more than what this couple could bear.
