NOVA ArtWorks Mission: NOVA ArtWorks provides a supportive atmosphere where adults with mental illness (SPMI diagnosis), intellectual and developmental disabilities, or a combined diagnosis can learn skills through art, promoting recovery and independence.

About: The program provides community-based mental health support with a focus on skill-building and psychoeducation through art.  ArtWorks promotes expression, empowerment, and socialization, and fosters individual strengths and resources offering the supports necessary to address individual recovery goals without the stigma of a mental illness diagnosis.  Participants expand creative talents by exploring a wide variety of media including painting, fused glass, fiber arts, printmaking, candle making, knitting, and card making.  Artists are also offered opportunities to develop marketing skills through exhibitions and sales within the community.  For each artwork sold, the artist earns 50% of the proceeds, with the remainder returning to the program to fund supplies and marketing.  This approach provides participants the opportunity to be recognized for their abilities, make a profit, and most importantly helps to develop a sense of self.

Program Goals and Objectives:
- Instill hope for recovery
- Develop a dynamic artist community that promotes community
   engagement and social involvement
- Provide opportunities for psycho-education and skill-building by
understanding and meeting each individual at their current level of
   functioning
- Advocate on the individual’s behalf and teach self advocacy through
   modeling

Challenge: ArtWorks is currently challenged by space, impacting the number of individuals able to participate.  The current studio space is located in the basement of a Community Residences mental health home.  The studio can hold four individuals comfortably, six maximum, at one time.  The studio lacks therapeutic presence with low ceilings, poor ventilation, warm air when the glass kilns are running, and distractions from the individuals and staff in the house upstairs.  ArtWorks also lacks access by wheelchair, preventing many individuals to attend the studio, as well as inadequate space to display and sell artwork.

Goal: With adequate funding, NOVA ArtWorks will be able to relocate to another location within the Arlington community that is more community integrated, accessible by wheelchair, and large enough to accommodate the growing needs of increased participation and projects.  The new location will also provide a space to display and sell individuals artwork, while offering new skills of conducting sale transactions and providing good customer service.

ArtWorks is seeking $82,000 to cover 3 years of operational costs- rent+electricity+water.

Join us in creating a therapeutic space for very talented artists.  Please consider making a donation.  Your generosity is appreciated!

Thank you!!
