Nourishing our children in spite of crisis
Children are the most impacted in the face of crisis. The humanitarian crisis in our community on Margarita Island, in the midst of a complete economic collapse, is so profound that the child malnutrition rate is estimated at 60%. The children in our community are simply not guaranteed a hot meal each day. In fact, a study carried out last year by the country’s three major universities indicated that 77% of the country’s population had lost an average of 19 pounds (8.7 kilos) per person over a year, due to the drop in real incomes and the harsh scarcity of basic goods, including food (ENCOVI, 2016).
Happy Kettle hot meals for kids
Responding to the needs of our community, the “Happy Kettle (Ollita Feliz)” project was born, and has been providing nourishing meals to children on Margarita Island since May, preparing and distributing between 100 and 300 meals to children in vulnerable communities on Saturdays.
The Happy Kettle project was started by the community-based organization of volunteers known as “MargaritaSmiles (MargaritaSonrie)”, which is committed to making a difference in the lives of these children, offering them a ray of hope and creating for them a hot, nourishing meal, and a place and time for laughter and smiles. The Happy Kettle project has already distributed over 4,000 hot meals to hungry children in Margarita.

The rampant inflation rate affecting the country, expected to reach 2,400% by the end of next year, is causing food prices to rise almost daily, and to double every 6 to 8 weeks. This situation is making it harder and harder for our local community members to contribute without putting at risk their own health and nourishment needs.
How far will $1,000 go?
$1,000 will guarantee Happy Kettle the protein budget it needs to provide at least 100 meals on Saturdays throughout all of 2018.
Why have we now increased our goal to $10,000?
The generosity of those that have donated thus far has already allowed us to raise capacity to 400+ meals every Saturday and begin a nourishment program for children in conditions of, or recovering from severe malnutrition. The crisis is deepening and so must our response - as our fundraising expands, so does our work.
