I am Dennis Davis, a 16 year veteran of service in both the United States Navy and the Air Force Reserve.  I began my military career in the Navy, a back injury ended my career with just under four years of service.  I never thought I would serve again, then came 9-11 and that changed everything.  I re-enlisted in 2003 and subsequently earned a commission in 2005.  I have deployed twice in support of Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM, once to the military’s only mortuary facility located at Dover Air Force Base in 2005 and to Afghanistan in 2010-11.  In 2015, after 6 knee and ankle surgeries and one back surgery my  military career ended, this time for good, a direct result of the original back injury.

While I do not wear a uniform any longer, I have never quit serving.  I am the author of  “Not Your Average Joe: Profiles of Military Core Values and Why They Matter in the Private Sector.”  I have taught and trained countless veterans on military and career transition and consulted with companies on how best to attract, hire and retain the right veterans for their organizations.  I am passionate about veterans’ issues, especially bringing accountability to the VA and removing the stigma from mental health issues including post-traumatic stress.

To help change the narrative around veterans and the challenges they have faced and overcome, I have launched the Not Your Average Joe Radio Podcast.  Highlighting my own story and experiences and moving to the stories of others, it is a thoughtful, educational, and inspirational show sharing veteran stories of triumph despite, and often times because of the trauma they have faced.

I could share many statistics with you on why I started my show to help eliminate the veteran suicide epidemic from upwards of 22 a day, more than 8,000 a year or the colossal failure the VA has been for so many veterans in need.  But experts say people don’t buy statistics, they buy real stories told by real people.  So, here is what listeners have said about this new program.

- A very interesting and articulate podcast on a topic many people don't know much about.
- Thank you for talking so honestly about your experience. It helps me to understand. I am not a veteran and don’t even come close to understanding your experience. I do live with depression and suicidal thoughts every day. Thank you for so boldly mentioning your relationship with Christ and how it has saved you. It has been the only thing that has ever made sense to me especially when depressed. Thank you for talking so honestly about your experience. It helps me to understand.
- I listened to your podcast and really enjoyed it. I want to thank you for your service, I can't imagine what you went through working in the mortuary. I saw a lot of myself in your discussions. I too, suffer from PTSD from my military service and trying to connect in the civilian community.  I think the hardest part is finding others to connect with and find support. In my opinion, that is better than most counselors I've been too.
And finally:
- So much of what you were talking about with transition from military life to civilian I could relate too.  Thank you.

Will you do your part in helping fund this ongoing project so I can obtain the equipment needed to tell the stories of others in an effort to save lives and change the narrative around veterans mental health?  Please donate today.  If you are unable to contribute financially, that is ok!!  Please consider sharing this as far and wide as you can to those who have the financial resources to meet and exceed our goal.  Proceeds above the goal amount will go to help offset ongoing monthly costs.

Never settle for average!!
