No Senior Goes Hungry

Neyla was retired and recently widowed when a friend told her about the Community Action Commission’s senior meals at a nearby community center. “I started coming because I had always worked and didn't know what I would do with my time. I didn't want to be depressed. My friend told me I could help here and participate in activities at the center."
Like many of our seniors, Neyla lives on a fixed income from Social Security, with only Medicare benefits for meeting basic health requirements. These “honored citizens” who have worked hard all their lives are now faced with the difficult choice between paying for prescription and buying groceries. With support from Community Action Commission’s Senior Nutrition Program the challenge is reduced. In 2016, nearly 150,000 nutritious meals were provided at 13 community centers around the county, as well as delivered to the homes of those with limited mobility.
Her daily lunch at the senior center means one less financial concern for Neyla and facilitates meaningful activities through our partnership with local senior organizations. During a recent visit to the senior center Neyla showed the flower crafts she has made for the various events and told how involvement gives her purpose each day.
In honor of our 50th Anniversary, join us in raising $50,000 before the end of the year to help Neyla and the many other seniors who need healthy, daily meals to remain independent.
