The anticipated cost of a replacement truck is $700,000
($600,000 for the truck and $100,000 for new tools).
Our current Pierce Heavy Rescue was purchased in 2000 and is nearly 19 years old. The truck is aging and many of the tools are not up to date for today's auto-manufacturing standards. The body of the truck is corroding, the mechanical system is failing, and it lacks the occupant safety standards expected for an emergency vehicle.
Why we need a new Heavy Rescue Truck:
The heavy rescue truck and the extrication tools on it were built for vehicles designed in the late 1990’s. Due to the 2012 Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, cars and trucks today are built to withstand collisions and accidents at a much higher rate of speed while maintaining the integrity of the passenger compartment. Auto makers addressed these standards with more steel using lamination, and adding “Ultra High-Strength Steels” such as Boron alloys, which are lighter and up to 8 times stronger.
The "Golden Hour"...
The key to all personal or vehicular rescue scenarios is to have the patient to an operating table or E.R. within one-hour of the initial incident. We conducted a time-test in a controlled environment and found that it took us 12 minutes and 17 seconds longer to cut the both front wind-shield and driver’s door pillars of similar 2003 and 2013 cars. Increased speed and force are required to cut through newer cars with ultra high-strength steels, reducing extrication time.
The Rescue Squad started campaigning for funds in march of 2017 with hopes to order the truck by the end of 2019 and take delivery in 2020.
The Rescue Squad is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity of the Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Service (NAFRS).
It was formed in 1959 as a volunteer service. The Rescue Squad is a licensed Basic Life Support (BLS) service, operating the current Heavy Rescue Truck-8120 and ambulance-8010, and covers a 144 square mile area.
The members of the rescue squad are 100% volunteers, meaning they do not get paid for responding to calls, they do not get paid for maintaining a nationally registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate, and they do not get paid for training.
The rescue squad receives its operating budget through donations. Historically, since its foundation, the rescue truck and ambulance have been purchased through donations. Once the truck is acquired, NAFRS will pay to maintain and insure the apparatus.
