June is a month of change in so many ways. The weather is warmer, the season changes from Spring to Summer, and children are gearing up for a summer of freedom from school work. Our family however; has endured a different type of change. An unwelcomed one. We received the news of our Dad's liver cancer diagnosis in early June. In moments, life as we knew it had changed. After several months of noting that the strongest and most steadfast man we knew was not 'himself', the diagnosis was confirmed and a treatment plan recommended.
Unfortunatley, the treatment is not covered by OHIP. It's concerning that OHIP won't cover what you need when the time comes. Although we have reached out to our local politicians for a change, the treatment is necessary and must begin promptly. So, it is with humble hearts that we are asking for help. It will be a financial burden through a time that is already extremely stressful physically and emotionally.
The treatment that is required is called Yttruim90 (Y90). It involves implanting radioactive beads into the vessels that feed the liver. This treatment is the most likely to shrink the tumour to a size that will potentilaly make him eligable for a transplant. Although the treatment is available here in Canada, and is covered in many provinces it is not covered here in Ontario. This necessary treatment will commence in the second week of July. The total cost for the treatment plan is $19,000.

If a financial contribution is not feasable, we absolutely understand and are not under any expectation of anyone to donate.
