'Nina' - a short film about love, loss and origami

 The Project

After working together on Pins and Needles, an animated short for kids (which you can watch here ) Kerrie and Julien began talking about working on a live action short, to continue to cut their teeth as writers & directors.

From a trip a few years previously, Julien had the genesis of an idea to shoot a film in a house full of character, next to beautiful Lough Derg. They put their heads together and the first script for ‘Nina’ was written. Drawn in by the cathartic story, Triona, John and LA joined the team, bringing their expertise in production, and heaps of good humour to the project.

This short film is self-funded, which is why we are asking YOU to make a pledge and help us bring it to life!

The Story

‘Nina’ is a story about love, loss and letting go, all wrapped in origami paper.

We don't want to give too much about the plot away just yet, but for now:

It is Sarah's story.  She returns to a holiday home full of memories, and the things that keep memories alive long after the moments they represent are gone.

She is faced with a struggle in her relationship with Nina and the visit is rife with heightened emotion. A loving surprise gently brings her some closure.

The Production

We want to make a winter movie that is calmly paced, tender and comforting. While dealing with grief, Nina has an uplifting message. It is about the subtle moments of grief and intimate recollections that happen when you least expect them to.

Woven throughout the plot are Japanese themed threads which hint at the characters’ relationship and the final plot development. Japanese props will form an integral plot device for the film as well as adding layers to the visual story. This will all be done tastefully and consciously. The house and its memories play a big part in our short and we will feature it heavily, making it a character in its own right. The house is situated next to Lough Derg, which will itself also play a key role in the film, offering powerful scenic visuals as well as peace and closure at the film’s end.

Timeline:
January pre production, casting
February props and costumes, work with the actresses
March 3 days shoot on Paddy’s weekend
April Post Production

Where will the funds go?

Catering:
Working on empty stomachs just doesn’t work, so we will provide our cast and crew with lovely food to keep us all energised in the cold Irish -potentially snowy- outdoors for 12 hour days.
→ Estimated cost: 750 euros.

Accomodation:
We are really lucky to have our location provided by our amazing friend and partner on this project, Triona, so we do not have location costs. However we will all need a place to sleep during the shoot so we need to find accomodation for the cast and crew.
→ Estimated cost: 1000 euros

Props and costumes:
The house is already photogenic and full of charm, nonetheless to create the atmosphere our story needs we will still need to do set dressing, as well as purchase some bespoke props and source costumes.
→  Estimated cost: 150 euros.

Post Production:
We are a dedicated team with many wonderful friends who have offered favours. But no matter how many strings we pull, software and equipment doesn’t come cheap. We need help to cover costs so that this film can look and sound as good as we all hope.
→ Estimated cost: 300 euros.

Travel:
We have a wonderful location for our shoot, near Nenagh, in Co Tipperary. Unfortunately this will involve travel and we want to contribute to covering these expenses for our cast and crew.
→ Estimated cost: 400 euros

What will we do with any leftover funds:
Any surplus will be put toward festival applications and getting the film seen by as many people as possible.

Why should this film be made?

This is a female led film, with a diverse crew who want to tell this story. Female led productions still don't get the screen time they deserve. Historically it’s been more challenging for females stories and voices to be heard, and so we hope our project will contribute to redressing the imbalance.

This film will examine the loss, love and and pain of an LGBTQ relationship. It’s really important for us to tell these kinds of stories. The characters are not tokenised, glamourised or sexualised for being same sex. But rather they are treated as unique humans and their journeys explored on an individual level. The team features several LGBTQ people, for whom this is a project close to their hearts.

We are all fiercely passionate about this film and are doing everything in our abilities to get it made. We have gone to creative measures to get props, venues, and support, but we need your help.
