My friend Nicola needs your help! Those of you that know her know that she has been on quite a health journey the past few years! I meet Nic about 5 years ago and have had the opportunity of watching a lot of that journey. I get the privilege of training with her each week as well as competing in Kettlebell Sport with her. I've watched her completely change her lifestyle over the last several years and it is truly inspirational. She has quit smoking, lost weight and become a proper athlete! The most amazing thing is that she has done all of this with several medical conditions that would make most people give up! Nicola has Lipoedema, lymphedema, and most recently has been diagnosed with Graves’ disease. With any one of these conditions it would make training difficult but Nicola has persevered. Nicola continues to lift weights, take spin classes and compete in Kettlebell Sport through all of these things. She is working with an endocrinologist to get the Graves’ disease under control but the other condition, Lipoedema is much more difficult.
Lipoedema is a long term chronic condition that causes an abnormal build-up of fat cells in the legs and arms. These abnormal fat cells are completely unaffected by normal diet and exercise. Lipoedema effects 11% of women, most of whom are unaware they have the disease. It usually only affects women, although in rare cases it can also affect men. The condition is hereditary and starts at puberty and worsens over time, getting worse with triggers such as pregnancy and menopause. There is no way to stop it! The only way to rid the body of this horrible disease is to undergo surgery, which the NHS will not fund!
Those surgeries are very expensive and have to be done in the private medical sector. Nicola will need a total of 4 surgeries on her legs with the total cost being over £20,000.
Many of us can relate to making changes in our life to put our health first. Nicola has done that so well but yet she has barriers that she can't overcome without our help. Most of us can achieve the goals we set out to reach if we are just motivated and disciplined enough. Nicola doesn't have that advantage. Although she works hard and has seen many good results she will still be limited by her condition without our help! Would you be willing to help make a difference?
